white balanced pics today (though I left the overhead warm fluorescent on still) The capsule is rather large, and not easy to see through (or shoot through) but given how dirty my apartment is, it's not coming out right now :) Sorry for that, but I think it's good enough to show what you'll be getting....

Thanks, NeoSpec. You do good work with those photos! So, pretty much as expected. The OGP wasn't designed with viewing the edge in mind -- it's the same packaging they've been using for the past few years, it seems. You have to take the capsule out of the clam shell to see the edge and even then you really can't make out the text well through the thick capsule. I'm betting it's easier to see in an Air-Tite, but even then I suspect the edge lettering will still be difficult to see in my CAPS album.

It would have been better to celebrate the anniversary with a privy mark. This was not well thought through at all - by both the US Mint and those who made the decision to begin with...

Thank you for the additional photos, NeoSpec. It answers the question regarding OGP edge visibility (or lack thereof).

so I know the mintage is unlimited for this one but how late will be the mint be offering these? Until end of the year or into 2017?

That is the BIG question....they might be limited to just 2016 sales AND this would also apply to the burnished version that hasn't even got a release date yet....or....they could be on sale forever (kinda)
Probably a significant question that should be asked to the higher ups at the Mint

From a strictly specification standpoint, the 2016 ASE (and the 2016 American Liberty Silver Medals) have exactly the same diameter as all previous ASEs (and 1 Toz silver medals), 40.6 mm AKA 1.598 inches. When I get mine, I will put a micrometer to the 2016 ASE and the 2015 ASE (in the first case against the smooth edge and in the other across the reeds) and post those numbers. Normally, albums have enough of an undersize to hold coins firmly, but I will also see how one of the 2016 ASEs fits in the one album I have for those coins. Unfortunately, I probably won't get my coins until next week, so if anyone wants to chime that already has them, I too am interested to know how they compare.

Just saw this on Coin World regarding the 2016 ASEs "The Proof and Uncirculated versions both are struck three times on a Gräbener GMP 360 press under 225 tons of pressure per strike." This means that the Uncirculated coins (at least for 2016) are in fact "satin proofs" having met the last qualification that a proof coin is one that is struct at least twice. I do not know if this has been true of previous years of ASEs or not. I would think that he smooth edge and incuse lettering may have something to do with the 3 strikes and the force being used. If anyone has similar information about previous ASEs, please enlighten us.

Since 2006 when Burnished/Uncirculated debuted, they do have a lower mintage than proof every year (and generally MUCH lower). This is normal across all products that have both proof and uncirculated versions. I guess we human beings like our shiny things.

Got a nice little surprise two days earlier than expected. Didn't take a pic of the edge lettering as even with the naked eye it looks blurry. You'd have thought since the edge lettering is the main focal point of this coin they would have made it so it'd be more visible.
