Nice, but aren't you straying a bit far from home?

Coinfrog, I keep my eye out for just about any Washington State National, that I can afford. Spokane is about 200 miles from my old hometown. As far as straying from home, like the old song, I don't get around much anymore(but I wish I could).

Here is a type 1 small $20 from the First National Bank of Bellingham I picked up last June. This bank was chartered in 1904. Kelly lists 77 small notes of all types.

Thrilled to have this note in my collection now -- Found it in pile of national at a show I attended over the weekend. What a surprise this was when I saw it gleaming back at me.

This bank is incredibly hard to track down even though it printed nearly $1,800,000 in national currency. Only 12 known large size notes known on this bank, including this one.

A buy it when you see it moment.

Great score. How were you aware of it's scarcity?

The mere fact that I've been looking for one for years.

But in all seriousness, census data is basically what tells me its scarcity, especially when there was million printed, but only a dozen have turned up.

Inexpensive wallet notes to show non collectors some of the type of notes I collect.
All three of them are fairly cheap and easy to find.

Some excellent notes there!

I was surprised how relatively common notes from the Ravenna, OH charter are.

Picked this up last weekend. Definitely CU with great paper wave. Reverse centering perfect, obverse a bit tight at top, but still good shot at 65PQ. Price was right. B of A is one of the most common small NBNs, of course, but "San Francisco" just looks so good an any note!

Here is a super cool note with a really interesting story behind its name. One of two $5 red seals known on this bank.

"Organized in 1781 and opened in 1782, it was chartered by Robert Morris, who helped finance the American Revolution. By a special Act approved by Congress, this bank alone was exempted from the requirement that it adopt a title including the words "National Bank" when it adopted a Federal charter in 1864, and it remains the only bank to have issued Nationals without that word in its title as required by the National Banking Act of 1863. Legend has it that the legislation was passed at the request of the bank in recognition of this institution's leading role in selling U.S. Treasury debt to the public during the Civil War."
