I collect Mercury dimes as a series, rather than purchasing them for silver value. Most lower grade later 1930s and all the 1940s should be available at a dollar or so over melt if purchased in small quantities. Even less if purchasing in face values of $50, or more. Then you can get much closer to melt.

If you are buying single examples the postage alone adds enough that you really need to be assembling a set to make such small purchases economical.

If I were collecting dimes for silver I would collect Roosevelt dimes and Franklin half dollars. If I were collecting Mercury dimes I would buy the key dates first.

to CCF fair1969.

What grade Mercs are you looking for? The higher the grade the more you will pay. Keep looking and you will start seeing the under $2.00 prices. It might be worthwhile to research the forums here at CCF to see where others are making purchases to get an idea of where you can buy besides ebay. Coin shows and local coin shops can be options to investigate. Deals are there if you are patient. Good luck.

You can get high grade ones (read: AU/BU) in the late 30s and 40s for $3-$4, including shipping if you look hard enough on ebay. I would suggest getting those.

Welcome to the community!

You need to talk to justcarl.

I sold my complete set (minus 4 coins) for melt value. Shows how much I care.

I do have a nice example for my type set. That's all I need.

What does it mean to stack silver? That's a new term for me.

There is a guy at my monthly coin show that sells Mercs for $1.25-$1.30 a piece. I pick out the non-damaged, evenly worn ones. I've only been buying these from him recently as it's the best deal I have found for these. He also has Barber dimes for $2 a piece around the same grade, but does not have them as often.

I believe silver stacking is buying coins for their silver content, not so much rarity or condition. If you bought 20 Mercury dimes from 1944 that are F condition, and do so every so often, I believe that would be silver stacking.

I get them for melt value at my LCS. I don't necessarily collect them, but every week I buy and sell and am able to keep a few dimes, quarters, etc. to build up my little silver stash. Depends on area, but ebay does have some ok deals if you buy in bulk and are patient.

Stacking is just buying coins or silver and holding onto it for long term some people think silver will make a big jump in price on of these days
