Quote:nfine: I collect what may be the most unloved coin in US history, the Sacagawea dollar. I can't explain why. The final coin I need is the 2000 P Cheerio dollar, well out of my price range in any grade I also collect SACs. I think they're great and under appreciated. As for the Cheerio dollar I advise you ignore it. Anything that comes in a cereal box isn't real.

I saved for a couple of years for my 1909-S VDB but I also decided that the 22 Plain was not part of the set in spite of what Dansco says. Ultimately, you have to decide how important a particular coin is to the set; in the case of the Cheerio dollar, it seems like a die variation, not part of a date / mintmark set.

I think the Presidential dollar may have SAC beat out for the most unloved. That is a tough question. I agree with oriole. When I start a set I am committed to the cost of what I am collecting for a complete set...or I make a mental decision as to what I will consider to be my complete set. For instance, I am willing to collect the JFK half dollars and say that the gold half dollar is not required to be "complete". I am okay with that. Others may feel the gold half is required. Everyone is different. But on the other hand, I could never collect Mercury dimes and consider it complete without a 1916 D. I won't even start that collection.

I've been in this boat many times throughout the years or should I say decades . When I come upon the last couple of keys that I just can't afford to complete a set ,I simply stop and start some other denomination . Right now I have 5 different sets going because I can't afford the coins to finish , or more like I can't justify the cost to myself. Maybe some day .

I'm fortunate that in most cases I collect date sets. For example, one of the ones I'm working on presently is the 14 pieces for 1934. In addition to some tough walkers in higher grade, the 34-S Peace is pretty evil.
But I knew that going in.
I had so many Walkers I decided to complete a medium set (1934-1947). I already had many of the biggies, so I've been working the set down to 7 more needed. That's not a set I intended to complete, but I had enough of the year sets done to make it possible.
On the other hand, I'm 5 coins left for my 50 piece type set of Classic Silver Commemorative. The Hawaiian is still one of those that I have to nab, but I'm still hoping to stay at 65 with no ugly toning.
Whenever I decide to work on any set I decide the grades I want and the actual selling prices. I also record each sale if I miss one. Using that formula I'm never surprised.
Considering what you could buy with the money spent on a Cheerio, I'd drop the Cheerio.

IMO, the Cheerios Dollar is just a variety, and it shouldn't be necessary for a date/mm set. Its also interesting to note that neither PCGS nor NGC require the coin for their registry sets.

I admire you for collecting Sac set! Very cool!
The bold tail feather reverse is a variety and need not be included in a business issue collection. While I understand it'd be the cream of the crop for your collection, it doesn't really make the collection complete IMO.
After seeing the prices, I'd rather have a new car. LOL Abandon hope in the name of sanity and reason. Coins like this are for the big boys with wallets much deeper than most of us.

Moxking you make some good points. For the $5k+ the OP would spend on the Cheerios dollar, they could likely complete a BU Peace dollar set with only the 34-s being AU. I second the opinion that you should pass on the Cheerios dollar!

I collect ASEs and I'll be in the same boat with the 1995W Proof when there are no other holes to fill. And I absolutely plan to let that one go until there's a point when I feel comfortable spending the money on it, if that day ever comes.

I agree with the sentiments of others-figure out what a complete set looks like to you going in, but don't be afraid to modify as you learn more. I started my AU LWC and decided after a while that the 22 no D is a mint error and I don't need it for a complete set. I also set aside a part of my coin budget each month into a savings account for key date coins. Might get one or two a year but it sure feels good to get those keys completed. I wouldn't get a Cheerios dollar for a Sac Dollar set. That money could get you a nearly complete LWC set without varieties in AU!
