Pictures of proofs in slabs... I looked at some pics on Coinfacts or some such. I get it. I could spot one in the flesh. Delineation between fields and devices and surfaces are distinct. They must be terribly difficult for the average person to photograph is my guess.

Quote: They must be terribly difficult for the average person to photograph is my guess. This is true. Mine are all in 2x2 flips and then in a 20 slotted plastic sheet. Not really worth it to take them out to photo them. And through all that plastic, just can't really see details well.

Well, its official. The last group of 4 sets of coins are enroute ... still in their folders. It will be interesting to find out if the 2 merc sets have any coins on page 3. The last set had 25 of 27, I think. The Roosevelt sets don't have any dated ports on page 3, but you never know what "extras" could be hidden there. Probably none, but we'll have to wait and see.
This feature may be the only "up" side to Whitman folders. They don't do the coins any good, but that flap that covers page 3 is a nice feature from time to time.

I'll be getting to check these 4 sets out tomorrow morning.
Boy, the US Postal service is giving themselves some real "cushion" this holiday season. These were sent via priority mail on tuesday, and they were projecting a Saturday delivery. They're an hour from my PO now and enroute to my PO as of 5 pm today (Wednesday)
One of these days I'll get fooled ... hopefully not this time.

This one turned out well. There were 15 extra silver Roosevelt dimes, and I was able to pull 3 coins from the second set to complete the first one, which also had 5 BU clad dimes, 65, 66, 67, 68, 68-D. There were 42 "hidden" mercs between the 2 sets. 57 "extra" coins between the 4 folders. 79 cents per coin ain't too bad today. Chance

Finally ... a drop of rain in the midst of a new drought. I picked up this AU 1917-S to replace mine, which was XF at best, and had no luster remaining. Its one I'd gotten from overseas a couple years ago, and I really didn't realize how circulated it was until after buying this one. FSB too.... Its not perfect, but a collection of AU/BU Mercury dimes is, by definition, "not perfect". Its an improvement for now, and was less money than I had invested in the one I just replaced....always a bonus. Chance

I think the 1917-S will prove to be an OK acquisition. Its certainly nicer than the one it will replace. I've logged a lot of hours lately looking for FB coins, especially that elusive 1945-P. I began looking at "short sets" a week or so ago. I found one such set, in a Capital Plastics holder, on ebay being sold by a private individual who does not collect or deal (ie: cherry pick) coins and sets (like I'm doing), and though the picture left a lot to be desired, the coins all look very well struck, with distinct central bands. The 45-P looks really encouraging, though I don't really think my luck will run that way ... but who knows. It has a distinct central band that looks pretty strong. I guess saturday or maybe monday, we'll all find out, but its anybody's guess until then. In assembling my collection, until JustCarl mentioned the FB coins (which I'd not considered much), my primary criteria when setting coins aside from sets I was buying, was flash and luster, along with the coins being as free from gouges and detractions as possible, particularly of those coins from the post 1934 period. Of the 15 issues in the short set (41-45), I had unwittingly picked up 9 with Full Bands. Maybe this set will provide some of the other 6, and maybe it won't. One thing's for sure. I think there's precious little hope of picking up a 45-P FB by perusing thousands of individually listed coins. If I do score one ... it will likely be in this manner...or maybe stuffed into a Thumb Buster folder.... like the 21-P I picked up. That's my thought process going in. I was able to negotiate a price that leaves me in a good position even if it turns out to be less than I'd hoped for...a hair over 8 dollars per coin for blast white BU mercs fits my budget OK right now. I have a few FB later date duplicates, so even if I do pull a few coins from the set and release it back into the wild, it won't go back out with no desirable coins in the set. Chance

I got the short set in, and the coins are beautiful. I snitched a 41-S FB and added a 42-D FB, so the set still has 5 FB coins, and I don't see a single coin that's less than a 64. The 45-S does look to have a wee bit of dip residue on it...at least I think that's what it is.
If the set doesn't move relatively quickly, I'll break it up and sell the empty holder to boot. One of those little plastic studs broke, but I have a little bottle full of those from proof sets I busted up, so no biggie.
The 17-S is a little "baggy" ... primarily on the obverse (whitman folder resident?) ... but it is a FB coin.

It was an OK deal ... but That set I bought in early Nov ... will be hard for me to top. I'll probably never join a TPG and have them graded, but if I did, the combined total of the MS FB coins in that one set ... and the 1921-P with ED ... is $4780.00 on numismedia, NGC's site ... that's for slabbed coins....and like I said ... I'll likely never have it done. Chance
