Its unfortunate ... but its bent, and it pretty much has to be PMD. Its a mystery though how it could have happened. Another will pop up sooner or later. I don't think I'm expecting too much of the US mint's product at all. In 1917, they'd been "in the game" for 125 years. That's a lot of practice. ebay search tip: I sometimes intentionally search for misspelled terms ... "sliver dimes" ... "mecury dime", and remember ... all categories. Searching within coins and paper money ... search Mercury and complete, or missing. That will bring up sets. Sometimes they'll want to send you to ebay motors. Use the category drop down box at the top of the search page to switch back to coins and paper money if they do... Then select sub categories to the left if you want to. Chance

Have you tried any coin shows? Do they have them where your at? What is good about a coin show is many of the dealers travel around and could possibly pick up coins most people never see.

There probably are shows from time to time in the Pittsburgh area ... the problem with that is "the Pittsburgh area". The only time I stray there... is if I'm in the hospital. Driving there ... will put you in the hospital.
Its been a few years since I've even heard of any coin shows. I'm sure if I were to seek that information, I could find out a lot more, but I just don't travel much, and until I'm in better physical condition, I'm sure not to travel.

Its really odd that I've seen more good buys on 17-D and 17-S coins across the globe than the higher mintage Philadelphia issue. Today's ebay tip ... rather than sign on to a foreign site like the UK site or the German site and searching across the European Union, try conducting a search from the US site and selecting "worldwide" from the column on the left. This will bring up a ton of listings, mostly in the US. By searching for "one dime" and "USA", you will get primarily listings of those in foreign countries. "Dime Coin" is another good one. We here in the US just don't call it a "dime coin" ... its just a dime. Using this type of search will bring up listings in South America, Puerto Rico, Albania ... any country not in the EU. Its amazing how many of these little jewels were taken home as souvenirs of trips abroad. If you are on a foreign site, the good news is that aside from a few places, Mercury dime" is what its called. Mercurio 10 centessimi is a popular way to reference the coin in Italy. ...on another note.... I took the day off yesterday and pretty much laid on the sofa nursing this hernia. I have got to get it repaired. Its to the point of possibly being life threatening. Its right in the proximity of a main vein, the one they use when they do a heart Cath. If, during the process of getting "things" back in place, I were to rupture that vein, I'd bleed out in short order. Until I'm able to get the surgery, I'll still be "in the hunt". I'm wearing the truss more, but its really uncomfortable. Hope everybody has a Merry Christmas, and that you are all able to spend time with those you love. Make a memory today. It might be your last chance. You just never know. Chance

I finally, after deliberating for days, pulled the trigger on this unusual Mercury dime. Its a 1918-D, and appears to be an adjustment strike. The majority of the flow lines are intact, and there's no way you wear that much detail from the braids of her hair ... and leave the details of the wing feathers fully intact. No chance for Full Bands on this puppy. It doesn't even have a center band. It's nothing I "needed", but I thought it unusual enough (and cheap enough) to add to the collection on the 4th page, which has varieties, some high grade extras, and "weird stuff". If you want to see the larger images, you can check out the following ebay item: 253325234220Chance

I ran to get it fixed due to someone I know died from one that shut on his insides so it stangeled him internally.

I know ... I'm playing with fire right now. I'm going to put a call in to the hospital tomorrow morning to see if they'll assign me a social worker so I can have the surgery prior to the paperwork because of the seriousness of the situation. I got the 1917-D in from Great Britain this morning. As I expected, it's way better than the VF they sold it as. This coin was just 20.11 delivered from Great Britain. It has considerably more luster than the one currently residing in the collection, and had it been circulated a wee bit less, would have been FB. I'm real pleased with this addition though. I also bought a decent 17-P from another GB seller, but its not what I need for the collection. It was something like 6 dollars including postage though, and is pretty darn nice, still retaining some luster. Here's the 17-D... Chance

...and PCGS has only graded 6 adjustment strike Mercury dimes, so even though this one isn't as extreme as the one that the seller's repeatedly tried (and failed) to get 1100.00 for, its still got to be worth more than the trivial sum I paid for it. Chance

Here's a story I can tell on myself ...
I've misplaced the 1917-S that got bumped from the collection last week ... and it may actually be in the trash, because I threw away a bunch of staple type holders ... which I was sure were all empty. Now I'm not sure emough to send the trash to the landfill without going through it ... and I don't relish the idea of doing that.
The funny part, is that while looking for it, I found a bank envelope with 160 dollars in it that I had forgotten I even had. I swear I get dumber by the day. That cash has been sitting there for about 6 weeks.

Ouch. Good luck with the hunt. I remember thinking my university class ring was accidentally tossed in the trash with some takeout food containers. I went dumpster diving looking for my trash bags. Nothing. Fast forward three days, I find the ring on the floor under the couch. Must have fallen off the TV tray.

I performed the disgusting task of scouring the trash ... and thankfully (I think) I wasn't stupid enough to mistake an AU dime for an empty holder. That doesn't answer the "what the heck did I do with it" question, but at least the refuse company can have my trash and I won't be wondering....
I lost my wedding ring once ... did the same thing ... rooting through the disgusting trash. I found it later that same day ... in a work glove I'd worn the night before.
The hunt continues....

I hope it turns up eventually. If not in the trash, it could not have gone far, right?
