Making up a set of Mercs tonight .... actually 4 sets. I won't waste a whole bunch of time on these silly Roosevelt dimes, but the ebay item no, in case you wanted to look at the original pics ... is 172972036758. Just copy that and paste it into the dialog box at the top of any ebay page and it should show you the listing. You may have to click on "see original listing". All of the San Francisco issues are present, so the coins needed to complete the collection through 1964, are all easy ones. I decided to keep the 2 Canadian dimes since they're a bit loose and want to fall out anyway. They look plenty normal enough today. Here are the pics I just took. Lots of eye straining and confusion ahead tonight. Chance

That shows just how long I've been away ... duh.
Its been an eventful few days. I got one of the 2 seta in and it had a few good coins in it, but the second set was the one that I was really anticipating. Well ... it's only the second set that I've bought from a dealer, and as good as the first deal was, from Rick Snow, I don't feel that the seller did an especially good job of disclosing problems, as I do in my listings. The 17-D did indeed have all the details that I thought I could see, but the fact that it had been whacked with a hammer kind of never got mention. Likewise the 21-D had a dent in it. That's the kind of things you disclose when selling ... well, I think its incumbent upon ME to disclose those sorts of things.
That said ... I never return stuff. Its always a gamble ... and when you gamble and win, you can smile all day long, but when you gamble and lose, you need to keep a stiff upper lip.
I spent 2 days working with the remainder of my inventory of mercs to put them into sets. One is quite nice, while the others are so-so. I'm not listing all of them at the same time. Its just too confusing.
I did run the numbers on what I've spent and what I've sold. Since I was able to sell some high grade singles, I've recovered 75% of my investment, and have 4 sets of mercs and those silver Roosevelts as well, so I feel as though I'm in fine shape that way. If the nicest set I have up doesn't sell before long, I'll pull the listing and start selling the earlu AU and BU coins individually. Chances are I'll do better that way anyway.
More later .... Chores to do tonight.
Oh, I forgot. I went through my collection and marked the coins that are FSB. There are 24 of them....out of 74. Just 50 more to go.
Chance.

That's quite an achievement, I'm sure. All of the ones I have that were minted prior to 1934 are Philly minted ones, naturally. I have some that are so close, but just not quite there. My 21-P and 25-D are both almost FB ... but "close" only counts in horseshoes ans hand grenades.
Good luck finding the 18-S. If I see one ... I'll make sure you get it, since I need so many anyway.
That means you have a 45-P?

I know I've asked this before, but I hope someday Carl will start showing close-ups of his set!

Quote: That means you have a 45-P? Yes. And same with the 42/41, Micro S 45, and all the rest. I don't have any recent photos but next time I get those from my Safe Deposit box, I'll photo them. I did find these older photos of some of them.

Some really nice coins there for sure.
I think this collecting strategy has been a winner for me. After the sale of a pretty nice set yesterday. I've now recovered all but maybe 50 dollars of the money I've put out, and I have 4 sets of dimes left to sell. 2 are relatively complete, while 2 are more sparsely populated.
I probably upgraded a third of my collection, for nothing other than the investment of time....a good bit of time, though.
With just 2 coins to replace...sets are going to be less and less likely to be of help. I'll still look, naturally, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for the issues that I need to show up in a set any time soon. BUt strange things happen sometimes.

If I read justcarl right ... his dimes don't live with him. It would be nice to see them all, but the task of photographing them is not a small one. Sometimes along the way, in the midst of the search, I stumble across something else. I couldn't help but buy this little type set of dimes. The Bust dime is pretty nice. Heck, all 3 are pretty nice. I looked at Numismedis, and an 1836 Bust dime in EF-40 is 288.00. I think that's probably high...but I know its worth more than I paid for it. Just looked....and it was listed under bullion/silver/coins 152804063604Chance
