100 years before Pearl Harbor. If they only knew then what was in store for the country a century later. This little lady actually has some very interesting color that you can't really pickup in the images. One of my favorites.

Here's a counterstamped 1841 Seated dime. William P. DeWitt was a gunsmith in Elmira, NY, working between 1848-91. His shop was located opposite the Chemung Canal Bank at 418 Water Street. An 1857 directory lists him as also being a bell hanger and locksmith. The third pic illustrates identical stamps atop the barrel of one of DeWitt's rifles ...    There have been over thirty of DeWitt's stamped coins recorded on various coins. The latest dated coin I've seen is 1854, so it seems that DeWitt did most of his stamping in the 1850's. These coins circulated to promote word-of-mouth advertising. Finding an identical stamp on one of DeWitt's products makes this a slam-dunk attribution.
