It's a point well taken that a new collector who comes here for advice might get offended by the term, when no offense was meant. As a kid I collected a bunch of very worn Seated Liberty dimes because they seemed ancient and cheap (now it's me that's ancient.. and no wisecracks about cheap). I'm glad nobody said they were junk silver or close to it, because at age 12 or so, I would have been crestfallen. I'm still enough of a novice that I don't use the term. But I understand that it's also a useful shorthand for dealers/collectors who have been closer to the business side of numismatics for a long time.

An investor term. Note "investor", not collector. Much like the term, junk bond.

Not really true. Many collectors use the term as well.

Ok this is getting a little out of hand . To anyone out there new or old ,talking about a silver coin, does the word Cull offend you ? Most will say NO ,of cause not . So a Silver coin that we call a cull is nothing more or less than Junk Silver . Some might say if it's a Key cull coin it might be worth a little more than melt , possibly but not if it's bent, corroded, gouged ,heavily scratched and dented on this one Key Cull Coin then It's Junk ,Junk Silver . Hope this clarifies the meaning of this thread a little better . I make no claims on being an expert on any one subject .

Completely agree. Unless you're really a variety or error expert, culling through dealer's junk bins is a waste of time.

All coins are worthy of love, no matter what we call them. I love my stacks of junk silver - one, you can touch junk silver without worrying about leaving a mark; two, the heft of big stack of silver is pretty impressive and three; they have an inherent value that modern junk coins do not.

Don't you just love the sound and feel of junk silver in your hand? Me too!

Boy, what a sound! How I love to hear that old money plink! That beautiful sound of cold, hard cash. That beautiful, beautiful sound.

Quote: "junk"? I think not. I just think everyone should lay off that term . Thanks for listening I agree with you completely. However, please remember that not all people have good Cents. Even on this forum you will get some people that just don't know how to say good things about anything. Yes those are the ones that would say almost any coin is just not up to their standards so it must be junk. Imagine what a great world this would be if every one said only good things about everything.

There is a difference between "cull" silver coins and "junk" silver coins in the market place. Cull coins are those badly damaged and not collectible. "Junk" silver coins (market term) can be collected by date and mint and are just very common circulated coins with only silver value. When buying junk silver 90% coin rolls, most people do not want cull coins included. Dealers buy these below spot/melt price.

What an interesting thread ; Look , in my honest opinion if a silver coin is crappy enough to not fit into my collection then I call it junk silver and in my special box labeled Junk Silver it goes . However I'm good with anyone who don't agree with me .To each his own and we all have our preference and opinions on the definition of junk silver . So call it what ever you want , just don't try to sell me it and saying it's an EF or AU .

Many junk silver coins are in fact EF or AU, they are just common enough dates that their value tracks spot closely.

Very true. "Junk" is just age-old industry jargon that will never go away. Best to accept that and not get offended if a poster refers to your coin in that obvious context.
