As always, I'll give you the whole coin. I picked this one up for $10 at a coin show about a week ago:

wd1040 got it. I'm going to have to start trying harder.

Does anyone know anything about this coin? With 2,000,000 originally minted, it appears as if it were originally meant for circulation. Krause says that better than half were melted down, but doesn't say why.

It appears in the Krause, Circulating World Coins catalogue so if Krause is correct I would assume it was meant for circulation, although I would suspect that most were hoarded.

With the Irish change to decimal coinage only five years later I assume the government recalled as many as they could get their hands on prior to the switch over. These must have been what were melted.

I'm hypothesising here though. Do we have any Irish members we could ask?

Right... I don't know enough about Irish coinage so I'll just not say anything...

Here's a new one! Which country's centisimo is it?
