I moved out of collecting silver eagle proofs some time back because of milk spots. I lost my hind-end holding some of these in slabs. But I still collect silver eagle bullion and burnished in littleton albums. I have all of them and keep it up to date. I give all of the new arrivals an acetone bath and store the albums with a 3M ANTI-TARNISH strip and renewable silica. So far do good in that endeavor. I have a few proof and special finishes in TPG holders as well. I like them. But the PCGS 70 grade I received on this issue went for $2800 on ebay. Sell it while it's hot is my advise. Or hold it you're a completest and hope it doesn't develop milk spots.

If anyone is looking to sell, now is the time. It's definitely a seller's market right now and potential sellers should take advantage of it before the hype dies down.
Full disclosure: I wasn't interested in getting one, and I suspect I wouldn't have gotten one even if I tried.

Has anyone else had a proof ASE develop milk spots? That's an unsettling thought! None of mine (all OGP) have them, but I certainly want to protect the coins as best I can.

My oldest ASE is 1998 and it toned, but that one I got from my dad and he had it improperly stored, so I'm not surprised. I have Mercury dimes from the 1930's that look like they came out of the mint so my expectation is that properly stored coins will be ok.

The VERY high Percentage definitely goes to PCGS I think I have only seen one ASE get spots in the OGP....

From reading these posts looks like a few people have more than 1.

Milk spots on ASEs are an issue, mostly normal proofs but all versions have been known to get them. They aren't as much of an issue as they used to be, but still an issue. They're an issue from the mint, the mint themselves admits this and it's something that all the mints world wide experience to some extent with some being worse than others. Aside from some absurd NGC marketing, there is absolutely no shred of credible evidence that the TPG holder has anything to do with it. Milk spots are into the coin they don't sit on the surface and cannot be dipped off

So if you have a rating of X, and the coin inside the slab develops milk spots or some other flaw, does that original grade no longer count? If you were to buy a coin marked as 70, but when you get it, would you be upset if it had those flaws that occurred/appeared after its encapsulation?

The coin would have to be sold with issues identified...a 70 grade would not be appropriate for a spotted coin..but..grades below that might be

Quote: Did you get one? What grade and serial number? Are you keeping it? I did, it got a 70 with a nothing special high 2xxxxx cert. It's being sold. I might get another one with the proceeds but there's some foreign gold I want soooooooo Quote: So if you have a rating of X, and the coin inside the slab develops milk spots or some other flaw, does that original grade no longer count? Generally what would happen is it would sell for over the 69 but less than the 70. Some of it depends on how bad the spotting is and where it is. A small spot on the reverse most wouldn't be to overly concerned about, a big one across the face though or many etc would be another store. If you really want to see someone get upset (which they would have every right to be) use a pristine stock photo and send a milk spotted one

Went from mailbox to safe in about 4 minutes, might be graded in the near future ( +/- a year) Have collection of ASE's except 1, most in OGP some slabbed. This is the only 1 I would call "boxed"...Not selling unless I find out it's a signed COA

That is going to be a bit difficult if it's still in a sealed box. :)
