Can anyone explain this error? Looks like the planchet was already (partiatly) damaged before minting. How would one define this?

I'm no expert, but if this coin was in my collection I'd be tagging it as a defective planchet. Can't really see it happening post mint.

Surprising there have been no responses so far.

Likewise I am no expert.

If I understand correctly, lamination errors occur when there is a defective planchet (impurity, inclusion, etc), which causes metal to flake off or peel off post-strike.

Seems to me this is likely what happened to this coin. I would guess that if this crater were present in the planchet before the strike, the result would have been an uneven distribution of metal near the defect, but a smoother flow of the metal around it than what is seen here?

AGain, this is an amateur's 2-cents worth, and it would be interesting to hear one of our error experts chime in.
