Wow! Amazing condition on that coin! This undated grosso of the Republic of Florence is dateable to 1405 from the mint master's insignia (MIR 58/7, N#320182):

Quote: Wow! Amazing condition on that coin! Thanks Tdziemia. The whole run of Bahmanis tankas are in really nice condition, but the 1405 is the stand-out IMO. Back home earlier than expected, but I'll take the opportunity for an early nite.

Looking good! As a reminder, because of the way the calendars align, we will accept AH 808 coins today as well as AH 807.

My contribution to the thread for today is this Groschen from the German city of Aachen that is dated 1405 AD. We are starting to get to the beginning of the book though--I have attributed this one as Levinson I-8. Interestingly, the last digit of the date is al spelled out (QVINTO)

Quote: Interestingly, the last digit of the date is al spelled out (QVINTO) Yes, very interesting indeed. Also the first digit... I think "millesimo" for 1000. Almost like a mixed metaphor, MILLESIMO CCCC QVINTO. And a two for one bonus, your coin comes with the time of day it was minted, either 3:30 or 6:15 ( the 'hands' of the cross...sorry, I see things on coins then I can't not see them.... a bad habit of mine!)A very nice addition for 1405

Yes exactly @ttk. If we continue progressing, I've got a similar one of these to post in two days.

1404 My next Bahmanis Sultanate tanka is dated AH 806. Approximately 55% or 199 days of 1404 CE fall within the Lunar Hijri year of AH 806 (depending on the calendar converter used). Again, the date is bottom of the RH picture.

1403 CE This next Bahmanis Sultanate tanka is dated AH 805. Approximately 57% or 209 days of 1403 CE fall within the Lunar Hijri year of AH 805 (depending on the calendar converter used). Again, the date is bottom of the RH picture.

Here is my earliest AD-dated European coin: one final Groschen from Aachen. Similar to the 1405 upthread, the thousands and singles digits are written out in Latin, while the hundreds digit is in Roman numerals. I have attributed it as Levinson I-6. I now will be sitting on the sidelines cheering you all on for at least the next ten years.

Nice one Spence, someone nipped a bite out of it! It's a great coin, and a mighty contribution from yourself and the rest of the players. I think we can now make it to the 14th century before the 7th edition catches up.

Quote: Here is my earliest AD-dated European coin: one final Groschen from Aachen. Didn't you have some 1370s Aachen coins? The 1390s and 1380s are going to be hard, especially without help from JohnConduitt. I do wonder how far we'll end up getting before the 7th edition finally catches up (currently expected in late June or early July, unless there's a long stall for some reason).

Quote: Didn't you have some 1370s Aachen coins? Well it looks like you know my collection better than I do. I do have another Groschen to post when we arrive at 1375 AD. The style is a little bit different, which I guess isn't too surprising. Sorry about that mistake.

Quote: Nice one Spence, someone nipped a bite out of it! He or she must have been traveling from Florence to Aachen, since the nip out of my 1405 coin is kinda similar. Impressive output here for 1403!. Mine is probably the least certain attribution as described above by Pawlikowski. Polish half groat with letter A below crown, Kopicki 366, Pawlikowski V:
