They aren't ugly, a Liberty nickel in AU/MS is pretty nice. Not Mercury dime nice though. I don't know why the whole Barber series look alike, I'm pretty certain Barber could have created different designs. For those critiquing the Morgans, please note that no one mentioned Morgan's as a top 10 pretty coin. Ugly Ben is slightly better as a proof but it's one of the few coins that even the reverse is boring. I feel it would be a winner if it went back to copper/bronze. Also, I NEVER liked the Barber coins or the Morgan dollars. I do think all of the coins that follow right behind were sharp though.
