I was going to guess that the lion is probably facing the wrong way, (mirror image on dime) and it was squished in a vice with another world coin. But I see Ferdinand VII is not shown backwards. Now I am going to try and find a die.

It's weird because all the Ferdinand VII coins I find have that Spanish coat of arms on the other side of the coin with the legend that reads Ferdin VII opposite side.
Of course it makes no sense that a Mercury dime could be mistakenly struck by a die from the early 1800's. Perhaps somebody was trying out making fake reales using a Mercury dime as a planchet and failed miserably.

Too bad they used a 1916 D to try it.
