I would appreciate help on what is happening to this penny. I am assuming there is no premium either way, but I have not run across something like this before.
I agree with the Ridge Ring theory. The die is flattening, taking over the void areas that used to be the L on Liberty. This collapse on that die area is seen more on the coins of the Zincolns of the 1980's. No premium as you mentioned, but sometimes knowing what is going on, helps us to move faster to the next coin during searches. More like a die collapse on that area.
