Thought I would share this 1951-D with a cool die gouge I recently found. And the mark on the reverse to the right side of the building looks to me like a strike-through of some debris from the gouge.
The way I imagine it is that while the obverse was in the upper (hammer) position, the die was gouged, and some debris fell into the design on the reverse, which was in the lower (anvil) position, a new planchet was inserted, and this coin was minted. But I might be wrong.
Looks like a coin scratch on the obverse. Note that it is not raised in the center. It is incuse and it damage to the coin. It would loose a few points on grading, but still a nice coin.
Thanks Coop, I respect your opinion, but I have to disagree. It's hard to get a good picture, but it is definitely raised and not incuse. It is only on the fields and not the design. I'm hoping the lighting in this picture shows it better.
