Thanks, GLB and Errers! Yes, it's got a lot going on - only year, rising sun, luzzu (fishing boat), agricultural implements and soil, an Opuntia cactus, and a weasel. Interestingly, Opuntia (commonly called the prickly pear cactus or nopales) is native to the Americas and was brought to Europe in the 16th century.

Exactly, GLB! The eagle on an Opuntia is part of Mexico's coat of arms, and has been featured on their coins since the Empire of Iturbide in 1822.

Nice one, Hondo! You've reminded me that all the 1986-dated Maltese coins were 'one year only' issues, as the obverse design was replaced by the country's coat-of-arms on later ones. Here is the 10 cents from the same year:
