Hello all, I just joined the community and this is my first post. I started collecting in the late 90s with the State Quarters but that waned, I started back collecting this past summer and I joined a local coin club. I have picked up some large cents, Indians, and Lincolns of which wheaties are my favorites.
With that being said I am looking for a guide that talks about and gives illustrations on wheat cents and the errors associated with them...Let me state the obvious, I did some research and figured out that the CherryPickers Guide 6th. edition volume 1 should have a wealth of knowledge but that guide is not in print and the starting price I have found for it is over $300.00, currently that is just not feasible. So other options would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and I hope everyone has a great day.

@87, first welcome to CCF. Second, in looking at a recent thread of the same toppic http://goccf.com/t/420933) it sounds like there may be a very inexpensive digital version of the Cherrypicker's guide. If it still exists, that is probably a good place to start (well, other than hanging out here at CCF anyways...)

I recommend to start with the listings of the book called Strike It Rich with Pocket Change 5th edition because they did a nice job of covering most of the main ones that are worthwhile to search for across all denominations while eliminating much of the rest. Its also good for beginners and may be all most need, then can use the free web site resources. https://www.amazon.com/Strike-Rich-...p/0593328604

There are also CherryPickers Guide. Vol II print you can get at Amazon and at whitman they are pre ordering another batch. Vol I 6th edition is out of print so recommend the kindle version but that is 5th edition. https://www.amazon.com/Cherrypicker.../B008S3BUDM/ Many of the good ones are already in the strike it rich book but might be good additions once you are regularly searching to go even deeper, as well as the mentioned websites that are free. Only some people like to go into this that deep where they wish to have all the different resources.

CherryPickers Guide 6th ed vol 1 That volume covers collectible die varieties of Half Cents through nickel five-cent pieces. Included are some of the most popular American coin types, including Lincoln cents and Buffalo nickels. The new sixth edition, volume I, covers Half Cents, large cents, small cents, two-cent and three-cent pieces, and nickels.

Volume II covers Capped Bust and Liberty Seated half dimes, dimes, and quarters; Barber dimes and quarters; Mercury dimes; Roosevelt dimes; twenty-cent pieces; Standing Liberty quarters; and Washington quarters, including the State, D.C., Territorial, and National Park series. A Volume III is in the works now also. We would have to check on a Vol III possible date and a possible reprint of Vol I.

Heres a few others I have that I picked up that have all been helpful to me as Ive been interested generally in learning about both coin and currency errors and varieties even going back to when I was a kid, but sometimes yes they go out of print until a new version is printed or even become hard to obtain later on if no reprint is made.

Originally I bought Cherry Pickers. I found the online resources John1 listed above had more listings. After a short time Cherry Pickers went on the shelf and I forgot about them. When the price on the books went so high I sold both on ebay and have not thought about them or missed them. Although I do admit the advantage of having a regular book in hand is just nicer sometimes.

After awhile of using the online sites though and researching (knowing the minting process and die making process), you can spot legit errors anyway. The only time I use the websites anymore is to get the official designation of a specific error.
