I'm probably late to the party, or simply looking in the wrong place, as I would think this has already been discussed.
The Mint is scheduled to release gold reissues of the 1916
Mercury dime,
Standing Liberty quarter, and
Walking Liberty half. In addition gold examples of the 1804 dollar in gold as well as the 1907 St. Gaudens double eagle as well.
From what I can tell by the current listing on the Mint webpage all five of these issues are to be issued in sets along with an accompanying silver medal.
I collect coins. I'm not interested in a medal. Seems like it might be a way to squeeze a bit more from collectors and get them to pay for an unwanted medal (certainly in my case at least).
As disappointing this might be to myself, I imagine folks who would like to have the silver medal will be priced out.
I guess for myself, once I have the sets in hand it will be easy to sell the medals in the aftermarket to people who don't want to have to pay for the gold resulting in a slightly lower price for the gold coins at the end of the day.
If my facts/assumptions are wrong, mea culpa, or as Emily Litela/Gilda Radner used to say....."never mind.
