I have seen a lot of thread on here that have sort of gotten me interested in a Jefferson nickel set. Then last week I cracked a 2005 proof set and saw the Proof Buffalo nickel .. wow.

I was looking at my local coin shop and saw they had a like new Jefferson Dansco/with proofs. It has 73 nickels all 1965 and up.
18 of them are proofs, all the rest are BU.

I know this would be hard with out seeing them, but what would you all think would be a good price to offer for this set.

It has been many years since I bought nickels, I am thinking of starting at $35.00.

I'll let the Jefferson pros answer on the starting price, and I'm sure the full steps come into play.

But I always wonder why someone would want a mixed/matched set. Wouldn't you want either a proof set or a BU set? Just trying to understand.

I think it would bug me to know that some of my coins were proof and others were business strikes. But, maybe I'm just weird that way.

Some of my Dansco books are just P and D , Some are P,D and S. I do have the State Quarter two book Dansco book that has P,D,S and S. That looks really nice. But yhen I do haqve the State Quarter set in just P and D ... that looks nice too. I also like my Sacagawea with Bu and proofs.
Also when I do buy the Ike book .. it will be BU and proofs .. I am not sure they make it any other way. And my 8100 Lincoln Dansco .. has proofs and Bu's ..

So ... I would think it is really more common for modern coin set to have both. ... IMHO

if I were to do a set like this I would want every available coin for that year including proofs so I would want the album that included that issue as well but I guess this is just a user preference. As far as value I have no clue

Sorry, I didn't realize you were talking about the books with the proof slots. That makes sense.

I have seen some albums that were just for business strikes and people had some proof/some BU, that's the part I was talking about and that would bug me.

This has been suggested by many on this forum, but I have to agree that getting the business strike (7-series) Dansco and then adding pages for proofs is the best, most attractive way to go. Then all the proofs are together, which looks awesome (e.g., for my Washington quarter proofs 1968-1989). Just check make sure that the 7-series album can hold the additional page(s).

My Jefferson Dansco did not include the proofs but I have added a page for them. They do look really nice together on the same page.

That is something to think about. The big part of this was seeing a possible good deal.

What does the extra page look like, I am thinking I like having the factory labels, that is
just me .. I understand everyone likes something different. Or am I thinking wrong and they make a extra page for just proofs .. with correct labels?

I have the Dansco 8113 with proof only issues. Something about having all coins in chornological order suits me. The book is 6 pages with 174 slots. It goes from 1938 to 2011.

I also have the 8113 but have added an extra blank page for the proof and SMS coins before 1971. Considering the album is worth over $20 new I would say it a good deal with 73 BU and proof nickels for $35.

Break it down. The Dansco book is $25.00. The proofs are $1.00 or $2.00 each ($18.00 to $36.00) and the bu nickels are .50 to $1.00 ($27.50 to $55.00). It depends how generous you want to be. Paying a few dollars more is acceptable as well as you don't have to do any work building the book! Sincerely, John Leckrone

Mr. Leckrone

Thank you very much, those are just the numbers I was hoping to get. I am guessing I will have to
give more than $35. This dealer sells the Dansco books that he gets in, to me, for $10.
Maybe $50 to $60 will be a better price.

I'd start at $60. If the '82 and '83 coins are nice I'd start at $65. If any are gem at $90.

The top price would be dependent on the quality of the set but these sets can get very pricey if a great deal of care was taken in assembling them. The complete sets like this sold by dealers start at about $125 now days and there were wholesale buyers at $100 a few years back.

I wouldn't have much interest in a very poor set but as a starter for a nickel collection it should be worth $60 anyway.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

One thing to check for which is VERY important will be whether or not the earlier pieces have good steps on the building. Full steps on Monticello bring big money in some circles assuming the coin is bu. One thing I would like to add is I spent $125.00 on an INCOMPLETE set which did not even include the 1950 D from a dealer friend of mine a few months back. There were numerous really choice bu coins in the set so it was worth every bit of what I paid and much more.

Glad I could be of help. Sincerely, John Leckrone

This is what I have with mine.

I bought the album to replace my folder. This was before I realized that I wanted to collect the proofs. Well, in reality, before I realized that I was going to break apart all of my proof sets.

For the record, my Jefferson nickel and Roosevelt dime albums are like that (7-series). All other modern albums are the 8-series with proofs.
