so I work at a country club and the members know that I love coin collecting.
today a member came to me with a flawless 1964 half in a plastic case. said he had 40 more exactly like it. he asked me what its worth. I showed him the PCGS list sheet for graded halves 40-ms-70 and said his looked like ms-65. I no pro, but they looked 70 to me. anyway,
he said he got them all back in 1984. he even brought in the newspaper advertisement "government silver released" said the gov was releasing 30,000 half dollars that were in vaults for 20 years and "professional coin analysts to grade and select only coins that quality to be flawless MS 70 unc. gems" and they cert. of authenticity to go along the article stated.
so with that said, does this guy have truly MS 70 halves? the holders he had were hard case single holders, nothing special. but if indeed he has 40 MS70 halves from 64, PCGS lists them as being $1500 a pop! thats 40k!
i told him I would ship one off to be graded at the local coin shop. we will see if he wants to do that. man I wonder..... what do you guys think?

They may be relatively high MS but I suspect that they are not really MS70.

The only way he would realize that kinda money would be to send them in to a reputable grading company to be re-graded.I would just about guarantee that the majority would come back lower,if even any would grade 70.Sounds like the typical T.V. infomercial except the ad ran in the newspaper back then.Just my 2 cents. As a matter of fact, looking on ebay, there has never been a accredited MS70 for sale.

I doubt that they are all MS70 - from what I understand, it is a lot of luck and a really really really really really nice coin which gets that rating. Even if you sent the MS70 in again, it might not get that same rating for hte same coin!>!

It looks like MS67 is the highest grade that PCGS has given to the 1964-P and MS68 is the highest they have graded the 1964-D so it seems really unlikely that someone would have 40 MS70's.

Not to rain on your buddies parade ...... but I very much doubt that any of them are even MS68! Here are some facts from today's PCGS Population report on 1964 Kennedy halves ...... mind you ..... folks have been slabbing these for as long time! See for yourself that only 1 of the 4,905 circulation strike 1964 Kennedy that have been slabbed by PCGS has even reached MS68. I'm not sure where you found a price from PCGS of $1500 for an MS70 1964 Kennedy half since none exist that have been slabbed? Anyways ..... there are the up-to-date numbers ...... looking forward to what you find out ..... but would caution about setting a false expectation and lots of grading $$$ in hopes for an MS70. If he did have 40 MS-70's, they would be worth way more than 40k. But he doesn't :)
