Yessir! I LOVE those old coppers! A 1798 is next on my list... justpicked up a crusty old 1787 Connecticut Copper, and that - aside from my recently acquired Pontius Prutah - is my most exciting acquisition to date! I just love it!

*Mods, I understand this has drifted from Moe's intent, but there was no other way to share sfchemist's excitement as there's no other way to contact him. I'll knock it off now. :D Please excuse our enthusiasm. =)

Here's another CBH that I thought would grade EF, but it came back VF 39.9999999. Well, actually it came back VF 35 ;)
It is Overton 101a---a rather common variety.

Don't worry about it delaner. The mods are a good bunch and understand when we stray every once in a while. This isn't a Nazi concentration camp 'ya know, and even Sgt Schultz (I mean Moe) probably won't mind if we cross the line temporarily.

Ooops, I accidentally just posted this well worn copper:

I guess I had better quickly make atonement; here's a CBH:

zeewool, that CBH is beautiful, ya gotta luv the die cracks---looks as if the obv die was on its way out. Your 1794 copper looks almost identical to mine, which is a Sheldon-71, purchased from an ol' time dealer and a great guy: Jack Beymer in Santa Rosa, CA.
Rest in Peace

If I accidentally posted the right '94, it is S-49 in an old ANACS holder (F-12, believe it or not).

Maybe someday we can have a early copper thread. I could hang in there for quite a while on something like that.

Yes, for anyone who just loves die cracks, clashing and Strike Doubling, nothing else in US coinage even comes close to measuring up to the CBH.....nothing. Here is one that I probably posted earlier, or one very similar to it (same variety anyway)....check out the cracks on this beast.

Wow, that 1812 is spectacular---the reverse die crack almost extends clear across the entire width of the coin. What is the VAM number of that one?

Heh, heh, the VAM number (or Overton number, as some folks refer to it) is O-106. It is an R-3, rather common, so if you want one, they should be pretty easy to find. I know that it is very hard to see on this particular coin, but that big reverse crack actually 'does' extend across the die; it is just weaker in the center.

zeewool, thanks for the info, I'm gonna have to look for one, although according to my copy of Overton's book, an R3 has an estimated population of only 200-500. I'll look at the pop reports for PCGS and NGC....but this coin looks so cool that I'll be looking to add this to my collection.

If you will look back through all of the coins posted in this thread, you will no doubt see many that you will want to add to your collection. The folks who posted here have some pretty awesome coins. I am envious of many.

zeewool, I just found your O-106 (VG Details at Northeast Numismatics) but it has been sold. So close, yet so far; however, I would prefer one that hasn't been fooled with. I'll keep looking as that reverse die crack is really awesome. I've been around numismatics for longer than I care to think about and for some reason I've never seen this variety....thanks for sharing it.

paleoguy, looks wonderful. Hard to tell on a photograph, but I'm seeing some original mint luster peeking out between some of the raised devices. Very nice.
