Poll Question
I have been crackin' Sets like a crazed madman in the last couple of months. I have a lot of Dansco's that are being filled and am having a lot of fun doing this, but now I've come to a matter of some rather mild concern for me.
I have to crack my 2009 Silver Proof Set ! Now, I went ahead and did it last night, and as you all know, it contains a Proof Set OGP holder of the Presidential dollars (which I already had), and it contained an OGP holder of the Silver Proof Territory Qtrs. (which I already had), and it contained an OGP holder of the 4 Lincoln Copper Proofs (which I already had).
And in the OGP holder that I "did" need, I didn't need the 2009 Native Dollar coin (which comes in the regular Proof Set), and I didn't need the Proof Nickel (which comes in the regular Proof Set).
All of these different holders come in this Silver Proof Set containing coins that I don't need.
So, I've basically destroyed the 2009 Silver Proof Set for a total of TWO coins ! .... The Silver Kennedy half and the Silver Dime !
This Set, I believe, has some "potential" to rise in value, and to hold a certain level of value for the rest of time.
I do have a "spare" couple of these Sets, but.......I just feel like I should be riding the short bus, after having done this for TWO COINS ! .....
What are everyones thoughts on this ?
Do you intend to do this too ?
Have you already done this ?

Lemme know if you think I've committed an unforgivable sin with a stupid very rash decision here.

In ten years.....what does everyone think this Set will be worth ?
Anything resembling the 1999 Silver Proof Set ?

Poll Choices
I will not break up this Set !
I will break up this Set !
I may break up this Set !
I would've got the single coins at a coin shop !
You're about a half a bubble out of plumb !
Glad you brought this up ! What to do ?
I would've got the couple coins on ebay
I normaly bust Sets, but wouldn't dream of this one !
I like to eat a box of Cheez-It Crackers before any rash decisions !

You have hit upon one of my problems! Buying and cracking the two proof sets (silver and clad) results in duplicates!

I have requested in the past that they make an "Ultimate Proof Set" with both silver and clad coins (where applicable), and no duplicates. This would be my annual set of choice.

i sure wish they would do that also, but that prevent the mint from being able to sell 2 of almost ever proof coin to the same person.

Sam reason the iPad came with wi-fi only, and then a few months later included 3G, so a large percentage of people would buy both.

As long as people buy both... they will sell both.

I don't crack my silver proof sets. I just buy the dime and half on ebay for cheap.

Half a bubble out of plumb!

and maybe a tad more!

Send me the leftovers, and any of the empty lenses you have.
I can fill them with other things.

I crack open a silver and a clad proof set each year. I still have to buy extra halfs and an extra Sac $. With the sets I have going my only extras are the proof cents.

eaglefoot: It sounds like you opened the individual sets first. That may be where you created a problem for yourself. Can't you for example put these silver quarters back in the individual set?

..... I knew there'd be at least ONE vote for "half a bubble out of plumb !" ...

As far as these extra coins or lenses.....I can trade the extra coins or extra lenses for coins I "do" need at the coin shop I believe.
I have not kept any empty lenses throughout this endeavor.

That empty "individual set" has been thrown away for some time now.....

In only having TWO coins out of this Silver Proof Set to put in my albums, I just realize that I'll have to either trade the extra's for something that I want at the coin shop, or just keep the intact lenses in this Set for whatever value they may have by themselves.
Maybe a little bit of both.

Another thing I was thinking about is the Uncirculated Set. Even though they are Satin Finish, I was thinking about doing a Proof AND P&D Presidential dollar album after all. I was only going to put together a Proof album with no biz. strikes or Satins....but again.....since I'm busting up the Uncirculated Sets too.... I GUESS I MIGHT AS WELL DO "SOMETHING" WITH THESE PRESIDENTIAL P&D SATINS RIGHT ? What else would one do with them ? ... ....They're way to small to use as coasters for cold drinks !...
A Proof with Satins album for the Prez. dollars wouldn't be a horrible idea..... .....but I don't think I want P&D biz strikes of these....

I have boxes full of empty lenses! If I ever decide to start minting coins, at least I will have somewhere to keep them!

It never occured to me to save these empty lenses .......
I guess they'd be better than a 2x2 for "extra" coins to be stored in !
Maybe I ought to start saving them ?
I know some of those older lenses were MURDEROUS to open for me !! I wouldn't use THEM again !!
Thankfully the newer Sets are super easy to open !!

Starting in 2009 I buy the uncirculated set, clad proof set, the silver proof quarter set, and the silver half and dime separate on ebay. This is the cheapest way to get all the coins for any one year (except business strikes which I don't really care about. I collect them for fun from circulation.)

Do you realize that the only coin that are silver in the Silver Proof Set are: half, quarters, and dime?

Which mean the best solution to your problem is to just buy the Silver Proof Set from the mint and then buy the clad half, quarters, and dime from another sources. This would prevent you from having to buy the Proof Set and end up with all those extra coins. I believe you can buy those clad half, quarters, and dime pretty cheap online or trade with other. (This solution came with an assumption that you only need one coin for each type/composition.)

The above is just my 2cents but I hope it will help.

I have never met a proof set that I didn't like better out of the fed packaging.

There are many options for the extra coins, store them away until you see a trade that interests you, start a Y/N out with some really nice coins(the rewards are priceless). or sell the extras at cost+ shipping to others who can't afford the whole set from the mint (also a great way to feel good)
