Hi, Last month, I found a 1909-S VDB while working at a gas station. I know...it sounds unlikely, but..... here is how it happened. I'm a teacher's assistant at the local junior high and I work pat-time at a local gas station because of the economy. I have worked registers before and realize it's benefits. I've found a roll of silver dimes, a silver eagle, and yesterday....(2) 1934a series $20 notes (sharp corners but wrinkled in the middle). One night last month, I was getting ready to close out my drawer and saw the back of a Wheat penny. Out of PURE curiosity, I checked the date...1909s! Wow, I thought $50! Then I flip it....V.D.B! I said to the guy I was working with, "Hey Jeff? I think I just found a penny worth $700". He said sarcastically, "Oh...cool!" I didn't really think much about it, maybe, subconsciously, I felt it might be fake. So, I bought it, put in my pocket, and didn't think about it until I was at home in front of the computer several hours later. Then, I got out an old price guide, graded it VG-8 to F-12, got out PCGS Counterfeit Detection and was totally confused. The next day, I went to five dealers for opinions and got mixed answers. My friend Jerry, said he knew a part-time professional grader who could look at it for free. A few weeks went by and I got an answer. Send it in to ANACS. Now, it's at ANACS and I am waiting. This has been quite an experience. If it is real, I am selling it to help my son with college. If it's fake, I am removing the "s" in putting it in circulation so no one else goes through this process without losing money and time. Sincerely, Jared

That is an interesting story. But--just my opinion (and maybe I misunderstood)--I think I would destroy the coin if it turned out to be fake. Why bother altering it and putting it back in circulation?
Sorry if I misunderstood you. Good luck, I hope it's real.

Hmm, and I thought the 1905 Indian Head I found in the cash drawer the other day was cool. Congrats and I sincerely hope that it is real.

Quote: I think I would destroy the coin if it turned out to be fake. I believe the poster meant that if it was a added MM or an altered coin he would remove the MM and put it back into circulation, if its fake I am sure he would take it out of circulation for good instead of trying to spend a counterfeit 1¢ piece

If it is genuine, there's a good chance someone coin collection was stolen.
S-VDB's were pulled from circulation prior to 1950. If you live in a smaller area, you could ask around or contact the local PD. It's a great find for sure.

You folks do remember that for several years at large shows they used to do "coin drops" as a publicity stunt spending rare coins such as SVDB's, 14-D and 31-S cents etc. Some of them would be found and broght to the show for a reward but many of them just disappeared into circulation and were never seen again. With all the coins dumped back into circulation again after the 2008 meltdown maybe one of thm has shown up again.

It would have to be a heck of a reward for me to turn in an SVDB I found in circulation, coin show or no.

Great find! I was ecstatic to find just a 1909 (barely a G3) last year. I hope it's real!

Wow! What a great story! Can't wait to find out how it ends!
Quite a bummer for someone if their collection was stolen and is being spent at face value.

great find, and a great story. I hope you've found the "real deal" I'm sure we have all - dreamed of finding one of the "biggies". I know I have.

like others above had said, I imagine with the recession alot of wacky stuff has been thro. wn back into circulation by unknowledgable people. These days I think its possible to find almost anyting in circulation so long as its not rarity - 7. Its amazing what people will throw into coin machinese these days. -XoG

Welcome to CC!
WOW! Amazing find, real or not! The odds of finding a forgery are right they with finding the real thing in circulation.
If it is a forgery, please contact me. I'd be interested in having a look at it and taking pictures.
