I don't understand the "s-vdbs were removed from circulation in 1950" comment.

There are so many pennies out there, and a large percentage are tied up, often for years at a time, in jugs and piggy banks.
It is completely conceivable that one or two have evaded capture even til today. A penny can pass through hundreds or thousands
of hands over time, and there is no guarantee that any of those hands actually took the time to look at every penny they get.

I am NOT saying this thing hadn't been in the hands of a collector before. I am just saying it is pretty bold to unilaterally
announce that there hasn't been one legitimately in circulation for 60 years. Or to say that by 1950, there is absolutely no
chance that an s-vdb was still in circulation, even in the form of being undiscovered in a coin jug, waiting for it's time
to go back into circulation someday, completely unnoticed.

I hope it's real, and I hope that this particular coin has never been in the hands of someone who knew what it was.
The second hope is impossible to prove/disprove, but hope springs eternal!

Probably because everyone is thinking "wow, I hope it's true, but won't I look silly if
the OP was just a troll... and there are more trolls in the world than 09-s vdb pennies"

What's the typical turnaround time to get a coin back from ANACS?

The comment is based on reports from collectors and authors who have searched rolls for decades. No S-VDB has been "reported" in circulation since the 1940's. S-VDB's were hoarded starting in 1909 from the initial striking, that's why there are so many MS and AU examples around.

Is it possible one was sitting in a "penny jar" for 80 years and was dumped at a bank this year? Yes it is. It's just never been reported.

Typical turn around time for a standard submission is 15 working days. They are actually running a little fast right now (12 days) so there shouldn't be a delay. Shipping takes time, but people can contact customer service to get the verdict when the coin is in transit - it just takes a phone call or email.

could be real and found in circulation no doubt, Lots of teens and kids dont collect coins anymore . They are buzy playing video games or online and find coin collecting boring.Heck lots of kids now adays come from broken homes or dont have close relationships with their parents to have the hobby passed down to them.

as far as it being stolen or taken out of a collection. I would not bet on it. A grandparent cound have died kids come from out of state grab a jab of pennies and nickels while cleaning out the garage or draws just take um to the coinstar machine at the grocery store and dump um in.

with the economey the way it is a grandkid sees a bucket of pennies they think wow must be a few hudred bucks in here and just dont have the time or intrest to search them

When I first got the collecting "bug" as a boy back in the 60's the 1909S VDB was my dream coin. I must have looked through thousands of pennies with absolute surety that I would find one. Well I'm still looking as are most. This story just confirms that dreams can still come true, after all don't all of us believe that things like this can happen to anyone. We just hope that that anyone is us.

guitarmonkee, I have to ask. why the slant criticism?

I get that you feel this person may be trolling, and he very well may be. But answer me this. How would you feel if your introduction here was met with harsh criticism and implications of falsification. I'm sure you would not appreciate it.

I'm not calling you out and do not wish to start a fight. Mods, if I'm out of line please edit/reword/delete my post.

Just trying to make a point I guess. Don't assume just because the of the odds, that hes lying.
