Quote:It was the basis for identifying the correct die of 1921-D _rust. This is a filled die that is much sought after. The correct VAM attributted to 1921-D _rust is VAM 1CY. The 1921-D _rust is also attributted with the 1921-D VAM 1 Ai. This is part of the reason if Leroy Van Allen could, he would delist filled die Morgan and Peace dollars. If he could? All of a sudden, I am confused again between strike throughs and fills. I have seen the effect of the missing t or s in trust bringing the letter profile down to field level. I have also seen mint marks with centers that are brought up to the profile height of the mm. This is the first night of my twilight vigil, and my brain is not handling it very well evidently.

its my impression that a strike thru is where any substance could fall onto the planchet as its between the die and be pressed into the die, and the filled dies are grease that was caught in the small letters usually but not always, and the grease can not be squished out due to the properties of hydraulic's, they can not be compressed, so they take up some of the space the letters should have filled up leaving them shallow, partially visable or missing..

Yeah, thanks Gene, I' okay now I think. Seems like I recall a VAM designated for such an effect, and it seems as though it was a '21. I saw a picture somewhere of an O mint mark and the hole in the center was gone, the O was completely solid, but the coin was worn and I attributed the appearance strictly to wear. Are there such vams with completely filled mm, and if so why are, oh never mind, I am just getting stupid now.

And you're gonna have to wait some more for anything cogent from me, 'cause I stopped at my usual watering hole on the way home from work. I live walking distance; I can do that. Don't get me wrong - the scribbles fascinate me. I haven't found anything at the National Archives yet (they're a short train ride away in Philly), but I'm still looking. They're only open one Saturday a month, so I can only do a little at a time.

I have heard that searching there is like looking for a needle in a haystack. You just sorta gotta let what ever happens to pop up enter into your memory bank and hope that some things tie together eventually. I was told that going in with the intent of looking for something in particular and having any success in finding it is nearly impossible. The guy who told me that also told me a lot of other stuff that.....well.....he told me a lot of other stuff.

....and I'm "from" Bennington, Vermont - just happened to be in Ohio when I graduated. I'm in Atlantic City now. Yes, I talk funny - whatever accent dominates the room at the moment, because I've lived in the South, too.

There were two 1821-D filled --t-- coins sent to Leroy for examination. Both of them looked alike in the respect that they had identical filled --t--. One was a PCGS AU 55 attributed _rust. The other was a PCGS MS 65 unattributed. Smitty and I had the pleasure of seeing these at lunch one day. At the time I was researching a 1895-S and trying to understand what I was looking at. Smitty pointed out that the dies were different. It turns out he was right.

Okay, we'll let you slide on that Vermont thing...... but really, there is no need to be embarrassed or shy about a speech impediment. (No need to claim to be from Vermont, or any other place where normal speech is prevalent). We love you despite your shortcomings and handicaps Dave).

Why do you suppose the area of 'trust' is such common place for this effect? I had once thought that it was because of the intricacy of the lettering, but I have had other thoughts about it lately.
