Leroy did a pretty good job of sequencing the numbers along the lines of the design changes. You can make attribution much easier if you follow an "eye checklist" of sorts. This is also over on VamWorld in the Attribution 101 area. Use this with the above eye chart and you should be able to narrow the 1878-P search to 20 or less varieties (far fewer if you have a major PUP like a broken 'N' and 'M').
