I've been looking at this coin from a distance in a case for months now in passing. Never picked it up to look at it but today I was bored so I took it out of the case for a closeup view. Glad I did. nlp

Nice find! broken N & M wish I could reduce my window so I can search this, off the top of my head I'm thinking a 7/8 TF I could easily be wrong without looking...Nice find though!

This has the markings of the VAM110. No 7/8 feathers apparent. nlp

Since Dave and Gene told me about the 78's I even looks at all the 78-s with broken 4th star and broken (R) on the reverse even knowing that few carry a premium. Nice find!

I didn't comment on this one because I couldn't see the pics from work. For those 7/8's that don't show the underlying feathers well, just look for a long nock and junk below the olive branch (circled) to confirm a 7/8. I presume this one is a short nock with a complete 'R' in Trust and closed 'O' in God. Which would make it a 110. An open 'O' would be a 145 and broken 'R' would be a 162. Fun Stuff!

Now THAT is an extremely impressive display of VAM knowledge Dave. I have read a similar display of attribution skills somewhere a while back, that may have been you also. It is that exact kind of knowledge that a person needs to be an effective VAM cherry picker. BRAVO....

this one looks like a VAM-145 to me which is a hot 50 coin. There is a few that have the broken N and M on the Obverse those would be the VAM-31, VAM-40, VAM-110, VAM-145, VAM-160 and VAM-200

My goodness, does 'everyone' know this kinda stuff except for me?

I too had trouble with the pictures, but dared not a guess anyway.

Now that I think about it a bit, the thread that I remember was came down to 110 and 145 also. The difference must be quite subtle.

This coin has the closed "O" and also has the die scratch in the letter E of ONE and D in DOLLAR. It also has the die chip on the ear. nlp

I guess that that settles that then I guess. By the way Nip, what were Larry Briggs' words when you laid this coin in his hand?

It's still sitting in my safe. Larry hasn't returned two of my morgans yet that are somewhat lost and I haven't sent any more coins in yet til they are found. I believe one went to LVA and probably got shuffled around. Worse case I should see him personally at a show in 6 weeks. nlp

zeewol - no, I don't know that stuff either. I suppose if I ever get into silver dollars I'll learn it, but right now I prefer just straight bullion - ASEs, Engelhard, J&M

Thanks for the moral support Waredu. I imagine that when the time comes, it will be easier for you than it is for me. (I not too smart, maybe that is what makes it hard for me). I see a lot of folks who are able to grasp the concepts rather easily though.
