I'd say ripped. Bet they made a ton of them. Poor Quality Control would by my opinion as well. can you return them?

Metalman, perhaps you've seen the earlier post about lathe lines on a 1996P Lincoln Cent. I had not, but alink provided in that thread is as follows: http://www.lincolncentresource.net/..=lathe+lines Maybe you didn't get ripped, might want to check this out. Let us know what you find out. Congrats on a possible great find. Maybe it is LL-001 in Abraham Lincoln Dollar coins. woo hoo!

Look like some sort of lathe lines but really choppy so I'm not too sure. Ill take it off your hands if you dont want that one..lol Looks really cool whatever it is.It came straight from them so its gotta be some kind of mint error

I have found two or three LMC's with lathe lines and the Dollar coin looks different. The lines on my LMC's are crisp and sharp looking and on the Dollar the lines look mushy and irregular so I'm thinking it may have something to do with the plating and not the die. Just a thought,I'm wrong more then I'm right. John1

The lines are a defect in the Plastic of the case.

I've noticed this on several dollar proofs. Not having good luck with the proof sets this year. Sent two back and had problem coins in the two replacements so just sent those back as well.

I rarely post over here but this thread was brought to my attention. I have been cataloging coinage with Lathe Lines and tracking them on my site. It is hard to say from the photos provided if it is from a lathing operation prior to hubbing or something else. Assuming it is not on the plastic as suggested, I would like to examine the coin if possible. Jason Cuvelier www.ErrorVariety.com - www.MadDieClashes.com

I would pay a premium for it I cannot see this affecting more than a couple percent of the total available Proof Sets because it is something that should cause a rejection by QC. Quote: I'm thinking it may have something to do with the plating and not the die golden dollars are clad, not plated

I see my post was edited to remove my name and website which is educational and has extensive photographs of Lathe Line examples on US coinage that I hoped might add to the discussion. Up above there is a link that member Dcreek1968 provided (sorry I don't know your name), the link (unfortunately broken), was to the LCR forums (where I am a moderator); the number written "LL-001" comes from my files: 1996D 1C LL-001. I currently have 15 examples listed, 14 Lincoln cents and one Jefferson nickel.

Photo's through the plastic are tough, I will see if I can do better. I may crack the coins out unless someone thinks that would be a mistake?

I don't think it is so much o a "crack them out" anymore. Since 1999 the proof set holders aren't sealed, it should just "snap" pen without damaging the holder.
