This, obviously, is a screen shot from the PCGS Price Guide for Jefferson nickels.

Assume you already know that "MS" is Mint State and "FS" designates a MS coin with Full Step detail.

About a year ago PCGS decided to follow NCG lead and add an intermediate designation known to them as the '+' grade.

Soooo ... PCGS can now assign a coin as grade say MS65+, or MS65FS+

Make sense?

wow... there's nothing from that screen shot that I could have used to determine it was for Jefferson nickels. I only knew that because I took it.

I knew MS was for mint state, but I had no idea what FS was.

There are more than just MS and FS though. There's also BN, RB, RD, FB...

"BN, RB and RD" are additional designations only for copper coins: brown, red-brown and red respectively. "FB" is, presumably, seen on the Mercury dimes page and denotes "full bands".

All of these definitions are in the CCF Glossary.

I'm not a big fan of the "+" system. It either is or it isn't

I mean it's 1 number. it's either a 63 or a 64. 63+ is a 63. If they have that much variation amongst 63's, then they're not grading strict enough.

Backwards, PCGS came first and NGC followed.

Logical deduction. The screen shot lists Mint State 1968-S coins. There are only two MS 1968-S coins, the cent and the nickel. There is no mention of RD RB or BN so it isn't a cent. So it has to be for the Jeffereson nickels

NGC always had the star * designation for superior eye appeal but they added the plus a little after PCGS did, not long after though but PCGS made the announcement first I believe

At the announcement by PCGS they said that NGC would joining them with the plus grading in just a couple months.
