Came across this little baby hunting through my rolls of fishscales, pretty ain't she? Put it in here so it can be community graded.

Earle, fishscales are the nickname for these tiny five cent pieces used in Canada up to 1921. Roughly the same as a US Half Dime.

Thanks for the clarification Ugly, I have some - just never heard the term before. I hate how people used to drill holes in these and use them for charms.

Just hanging around in a roll, huh?

At least AU-55 (perhaps a bit of rubbing on ear lobe and bow tops). Beautiful rainbow toning around edges. Wow.

> Fishscales

Better than "silver nickels", which drives me nuts.

Yeah a roll, I think the scrubs are from not being in the roll tight enough.

The notes on the outside say I bought the roll in 1981, looking back at the period I can understand how it got clumped in with other items not being a key date etc. It was my habit to transfer rolls of coins into plastic tubes and tape the wrappers on the outside once I acquired them.

I love the toning on it, I admit it. If you check the US classic coins grading forum and see the old Seated Liberty dime I posted you'll see another great toned coin I also pulled out of another old collections I purchased.

I'm not good at grading these, but I'll give it a shot... AU-55, because of the rub on the ear (although it could be a weak strike MS-62)... Beautiful coin nonetheless, can't wait to see what the grade is...

A tough one. The rims and field suggest mint-state, but the reverse crown and obverse beard are not crisp. I would venture a moderately weakly struck MS-62, possibly MS-63 with a point for eye-appeal.

Sweet coin and picture. Is that fishscale typical of the roll or the best of the lot?

It's average grade for the roll, but that's by far the nicest/best looking one in there. I have put him in an airtight fluffed with Argon, he goes on display at the Ugly shack.

grading is not my strong point. I'm guessing au50 or better.
