Walking Liberty Half And Mercury Dime Proofs?

mshev Valued Member United States 312 Posts	Posted 05/16/2011 3:11 pm So unfortunately I do not think that I've ever seen a proof strike of either a Walking Liberty half dollar or a Mercury dime in person. Do any of you own either of these? And what are your thoughts on them versus an uncirculated business strike? Report this Post to the Staff

muddler Pillar of the Community United States 7265 Posts	Posted 05/16/2011 5:00 pm I have a 1940 PCGS PR64 walker. She gleams like any mirrored proof but is not a cameo and cameo really makes a proof coin stand out. I prefer my cameo Franklyn's to the walker. Report this Post to the Staff

I selected mine because they did have some cameo contrast (but not enough to get a CAM designation from PCGS). I agree with you that the cameo look is very desirable, regular brilliant proof Walkers and Mercuries are attractive (duh!) but not all that much nicer than high-end BU coins, IMO. I do think that Mercury proofs are something of a bargain; you can get an attractive example starting at about half the price of a decent proof Walker. Report this Post to the Staff
Bryan1315 Bedrock of the Community United States 14454 Posts	Posted 05/17/2011 2:02 pm I have one of each also and agree they do not usually meet the Cameo designation because the way the dies were prepared was so different back then as it is today but you can definitely tell the difference in the fields of the coin as they are mirror like just as proofs are today Report this Post to the Staff

I bought back around 1980 from the guy who bought it from the mint in 1938. Cost me $550 for the set. I just wish it had been one year earlier so it would have included the Buffalo nickel as well.
