Pics of the reverse would show mintmarks and help to better establish values... You didn't do terribly, though! =)

I hate to think history like this is being melted! Good rescue and good coins.

I loooove buying silver for melt - especially since you can get Barber coinage for melt now!

Here are the reverses. I feel the need to "rescue" coins like this when I find them :) I didn't have time to search the whole pile, so I'll have to go back and look for more!

Yes, I'll snap up Barber's & Liberties for melt both from a value and "save the history" standpoint.

Good save. It would have been a shame to melt those beauties. I would pay that all day long. Nice job!

Nice pickup. I know we always talk about "melt value" around here, but how many coins actually do get melted? I would think it is quite small.

Are people actually melting these?

I mean , I hear of people melting jewelry and some utensils down, but I'd think no one would be THAT stupid to melt old US currency down....but then I'm amazed sometimes at stuff people will do.

Do it! Do not forget to show us what you found.

Sadly, yes. Those people see a commodity (silver) and not the coin.

These four for melt value was a good buy.

Silver coins are not actually melted unless they are worn slick with hardly any discernable details or severely damaged, essentially those considered culls. The coins pictured here would not be melted for their silver content since they are still in very collectible condition.

I always wondered how many of the silver coins are actually melted. At larger coin shows, you can always find several dealers who are buying bulk silver at a little below melt and there are other dealers with bags of silver coins to sell (at a premium above melt). I have a feeling that many of the coins turned in are just resold to someone else.

Last year when I was buying a lot of Mercury dimes on ebay, I got a number in larger lots which included many earlier dates and with mintmarks, but in lower grades (ag, g) for melt value. I also got a number of higher grade (vf, xf) of later dates for melt also. I would hate to see them actually get melted.
