I went through a buying frenzy on Mercury dimes about a year or so ago because they were so cheap for common dates. I was buying MS-66 NGC and PCGS for under 30 bucks (most of the time allot less including buyers premium on TT and HA)and ended up with probably over 100 Mercury dimes because of this. I just figured they weren't popular enough to create a demand even for higher graded coins and found the price goes way up in MS-67 so MS-65 and MS-66 is about like a MS-63 and MS-64 Morgan dollar where they are the bargains of the series and the next grade up the price can double or sometimes even triple in price

I love the mercs also. They are my favorite design (other then maybe the St. Gaudens 20's). I went on a frenzy early last year on ebay and bought a lot of them. I now have a complete set, including the 16d. I didn't buy the 16d on ebay. I would not trust it for something like that. None of mine are slabbed. I wanted them in my Dansco. I now have 3 albums and the second is close to completion. I am trying to upgrade them all to AU or better. I am about 75% there. I would also like to get a proof example (slabbed of course).

You know, the experts say to buy the key coins first. Many times the key coins are pretty pricey, including the 16d merc. They also say to buy the book before the coin.
So when I decided to collect the mercs in earnest, I bought "The Complete Guide to Mercury dimes, 2nd Edition" first. This is a great book and a tremendous reference. It even lists the proof coins in the set.
Then I saved my money and bought the 16d. After that I just went nuts with the rest. If I saw one I really liked, I bought it even if I already had 2 or 3. It was a lot of fun.
Still haven't got that proof coin yet...

I too love the appearance of that coin. Sure wish our Mint would start making more coins of all demoninations like those. I presently have 12 sets in Whitman Albums. 10 are complete. Trying to get all 12 completed soon. Also, with the loose duplicates in plastic rolls, now have well over 3,000 of those things.

I like Mercury dimes and have an AG3 1916-D PCGS, and a complete raw set minus the raw 16-D. I REALLY like Barber dimes.
