Quote: captainfwiffo: Silly question, but are you sure that damage isn't just on the plastic capsule? 100% sure.

captainfwiffo:
MS coin...if the damage is that black spot/line then an acetone soak might get rid of that (unless it's really a huge scratch)
PF reverse...well, IMHO the goober at 12 o'clock looks more like a planchet flaw than damage. It might actually add to the value since it was NOT post-strike damage..it won't grade 70 but the "error" might be offset that

I agree with both statements about the damaged coins. I believe that damage on the proof could make it worth more because I have seen people selling 2011 proof ASE's with strike through for over $1000.00 themselves. As a matter of fact I saw one on the ModerCoinMart website a week or so ago for something around that price

Yeah - the dark line on the MS one looks like it might be oil or moisture that ran across the coin. I'll wait until I have time to talk to the mint before I decide how I want to handle it. It wouldn't bother me as much if it wasn't the mintmarked 2011-S which is unique to the set.
The proof doesn't look like a planchet flaw to me, but I'll give it a closer look when I get it home and have better lighting and magnification. That one at least is not unique to the set.

In other news (just in case anybody cares), I think I've solved my storage problem. As I said, I had no idea just how big these sets are, and even a single one is too big to fit into my safe. Well, since I've already gone ahead and opened the original shipping box anyway, I decided to go all the way and remove the individual coins from the wooden boxes as well. I've left them in their airtight capsules and have keep each set together with a hand-made label indicating that they are part of the 25th Anniversary set. These will all go into my safe, and I'll keep the packaging in a closet somewhere in case I ever need it.

Quote: So, I might trade an MS70 2011-S for an MS70 2011-(S) (assuming both are anniversary set coins), but I probably wouldn't do it if they were both 69s. Hmmmmm....keep that thought...can you say "In a heartbeat"? MS70 (S) bullion coins will be harder to get 70's out of but no comparison to the low mintage and unique S (I know, it's just a MM) Good luck with your sets....

The difference between opening a set of 5 as opposite to selling it mint sealed. http://www.ebay.com/itm/18075298461..._6940wt_1202http://www.ebay.com/itm/27085031641...t_831wt_1094The first guy let at $300 in profit go out the window my looking at it. I'm just gonna quit thinking about it. I have a box ready to dump the mint box in and the NGC submission form ready to go. Hopefully in two weeks i'll be starting at least one whole set that says MS70. I want to get two more one to open and display on my desk the other to keep mint sealed. Man my kids are gonna have a hoard when I die. LOL

TBK, can you really blame them? Unless they have more than one box, then it's just plain silly. I have a box of five sets coming (not bragging), so I will have to open the box up to see my PRECIOUS , and sell the rest. Shipped/Billed On:11/10/2011 Type:Package Weight:15.20 lbs

I sold my box of 5, unopened. In fact, I still haven't even seen the box. I had it shipped to my parent's house and they signed. When I get home from work, I'll look at the box, and put it into another box for shipping. I sold them in less than a hour. I'll get a set though as my g/f bought 3, one for me, one for her dad, and maybe another to sell, don't know yet.

David Z, do you mind disclosing how much you got for your unopened box of 5? May be enticing enough NOT to open it.

to all of you talking about the massive size of the set, I told you that was my first impression when I opened the box. They are bigger than I expected Quote: I'm just gonna quit thinking about it. I have a box ready to dump the mint box in and the NGC submission form ready to go. Hopefully in two weeks i'll be starting at least one whole set that says MS70. It would be cool if you could have NGC make sure all 70's are sequential numbered serial numbers. I know this isn't possible but every time I see sets of 70's selling I always look at the serial numbers to see if they were pieced together from different sets. I bet people would pay more for sequential numbered 70 slabs just because the thought of it being a perfect whole set from the mint would be awesome. I know there is not even a guarantee that sequential numbered serial numbers came from the same set but it would be cool anyway

Quote: David Z, do you mind disclosing how much you got for your unopened box of 5? May be enticing enough NOT to open it. Not at all, I posted it on the 25th Ann. ASE set value thread too. I sold all 5 for $3599. It only took about an hour to sell on ebay. After fees, shipping and insurance, I'll make about $1800. This has been my best investment to date. I originally planed to only sell 4 and keep 1 for myself. But I told my g/f what I was planning on doing so she decided to buy 3 more sets, one for her dad, me and maybe another to sell, don't know yet. So I got my cake, and was able to eat it too.
