You can call and ask to have it replaced, curious what theyd say. Maybe some compressed air or something to blow it off but check with someone who knows more about the chemical reactions than I do
If youre going to get it graded, they should remove it for you when they do it

The Silver Searcher
I have opened many and just blown away lint etc. with just my breath Opening the capsule requires walking completely around it with a sharp knife etc. and picking the top straight off. I remove all most all mine from the capsules to photograph then put them back. Just be careful not to put finger print should use cotton glove

One of the quirkiest things that I've seen the mint do is the time they didn't pack a COA for any of the 2 first spouse coins that I had purchased. So in order to rectify the situation they sent me the missing COA's via next day UPS air. It probably cost them a small fortune.
This is why I really wish they call their fast handling something else. Yet on another occassion they wouldn't replace the broken cardboard outer casing for a proof Buffalo.
Things are stranger and stranger.

Looks like my coins finally arrived at my PO box this afternoon. Will pick up tomorrow! Silver Searcher: I would crack the capsule open and remove the thread.

Silver Searcher: I would crack the capsule open and remove the thread. Yup...I do it all the time. Sometimes the "marks" I see on the coin actually are on the inside of the capsule. It wouldn't be smart to return a set just because a coin has a thread in the capsule....

When sending in these coins to PCGS they only want the coins correct, they don't want you to send it in with the OGP, correct? They only want sealed boxes after the cut off date whenever that is, right? I still haven't heard of any cut off date from PCGS, does anyone know? Thanks!

1) correct..coins only
2) correct..only sealed boxes shipped by the Mint before the cutoff date..and only PCGS. NGC has to RECEIVE the coins by the cutoff date...no sealed boxes accepted
3) I read PCGS cut off date was 8/29 but it is not listed on their site yet. NGC listed as 8/29

Hey Foxwoods Man,
I'm confused by your # 2) you say only sealed boxes shipped by the Mint "BEFORE" the cutoff date and only PCGS. I thought they only wanted sealed boxes "AFTER" the cutoff date. Can you please confirm? Thanks for your help!

As you know there is a 30 day cut off date for FS eligibility. If your coins leave the Mint during that 30 day window then you have the privilege of paying $18 for those two words to be added to your label. As long as you send your coins to PCGS before that cut off date no boxes needed...just coins.
You may not receive a shipment shipped by the MINT on, say, day 29 of the 30 day period BUT the slip inside will say when they were shipped. These are still ok for FS (sealed boxes). Coins shipped by the Mint AFTER the 30 day period (8/29) are NOT eligible for FS even if submitted in a sealed box....

I just received a note back from PCGS concerning submissions and this is what they had to say.......
We will give a first strike designation to any coin that arrives before our cutoff date. It would need to come in in the sealed shipping box from the mint if you wanted the first strike designation after the cutoff date. We have not set the date yet. We will put it on our website as soon as we get word from the mint. Any coin that ships before our cutoff date can receive the first strike, not just those sent on the first day.

PCGS will accept sealed mint boxes for FS anytime as long as the shipping date is before the cut off and yes that means even 10 years from now Until the cut off they do not need or even want sealed boxes, Just the coins

I think everyones confusing PCGS with NGC. NGC is the one that said they dont want government packaging, I havent seen PCGS say that anywhere unless I'm missing something. I've always sent my coins in my OGP to them and they just package it and send it back never had a problem at all

...with basebal21, I've shipped both ways... Just depends on how close you are to the cut off date....just sent in 4set of the 75th ann. SF mint, in mint capsules. You can put them in a small Priority box, with insurance($600) was $13.50 to ship, you put 4 sets in OGP, its going to be twice that or more to ship...
