I just started collecting Silver Eagles and I have both the 1986 - 2006 ms69 NCG regular and proof set without the 1995 w though.
I am interested in getting a 1995 w and realize it is much rarer and will cost alot. My question is that I don't know what the best one to get would be, I cannot afford to get both the regular and proof versions so I will be getting just one of them for now.
Can anyone tell me alittle about this coin and want I should look for (markings, etc.) so I can be sure I get a good coin and approx what one should cost before I purchase it?

henry95401, this coin, the 1995-W ASE is a prime example of why you should buy a graded coin from the 1ST or 2ND rated TPG. The better coin is the 1995-W proof, but you are looking at $5K for the coin. I don't know what your situation is, but I would go slow and learn a lot more about coins before jumping into a 1995-W Proof. Just one person's opinion!!! Berry |

O.K. Henry, so far you have received two very good recommendations. I also suggest you gain in knowledge related to these coins before going much further in your colleting of coins. At this stage of your hobby, knownlege is a great deal more important than getting another coin.
Rule #1. Read the book!

I'm confused. I thought the 95-W was a proof coin. Were there business strikes as well?

No, only one 1995W was minted- a proof version only available in the 10th Anniv American Eagle set with the 4 gold denominations. I believe the original selling price of the whole set was ~$1000 with a mintage of 30,125.

great advice everyone and I will heed it. I am already learning alot by reading so many of the related posts...thanks so much all..
just to be sure I understand something, the 1995 w silver eagle was only done as a proof and released only with the 1995 10th anniv. 4 piece gold set correct?

Yes sir, that is correct. And they aren't kidding about the price unfortunately. I am going to raise that price a little bit as well. The latest CoinValues mag lists it as $6,000. You may be able to get it for $5,000 but either way, I agree with the others that your money would probably be well spent elsewhere for now. However, with that said, if money is no object and you are a completist then grab one of those bad boys!  |
