At work right now, but we are having or first snow of things year. Probably won't accumulate, but I am thinking it may be time to bring the coins in for their first review. Update tonight.

You must be in Indiana! First snow of the year here today. I'm @ work as well (in Indy) and luckily it's not sticking...but it sure is coming down! These flakes are huge.

I checked mine a couple days ago, but not much to report.

It's a cloudless, sunny day here, and I doubt it will snow this year. It rarely does.

Yes, Indiana, and they sure stuck here. My penny farm is under the snow. Oh well, should all melt tomorrow, then I will retrieve them.

Snow melted enough to locate the coins, so here is the update after 12 days half submerged in the dirt. I must say, I was not expecting to see such deterioration this quickly. What looks like dirt along the rim of the Zincolns is actually zinc rot starting. All the coins were removed from the dirt, rinsed quickly, and blotted dry before pictures. They are "clean".

I just knew it.

Those things were made to use once and toss.

More often than not, that is actually what happens. Everyday I pick up multiple cents from the floor in front of cash registers from people who receive these in change & either a)leave them on the counter b) drop them to the floor as they walk away c) actually throw them in the garbage can.

Currently, the four coins each sit in their own cup of salt water. I have a feeling that as long as they are submerged completely, the corrosion will be slowed due to a lack of oxygen, but I will give it a week or so, then try something else.

I never did get a picture of the coins in their salt water cups, but I removed them after 5 days of soaking. The water was tinged green, and there was considerable corrosion.
Again, I gave the coins a rinse in tap water, then blotted them dry with a towel.

The coins are back in the planter area, stuck halfway into the soil like the last time. I had to go to work, and that was the easiest place to put them. I am open to suggestions for torture tests.

Interesting that it toned that way in salt water, isn't it!
