INDORE:This state originated in 1732.AD. It was ruled by Holkar group of Marathas. Maratha Peshwa gave this land to one of his commanders who helped him in his military campaigns.Indore was a prominent state in the Central India thence. They defeated the Peshwas in the nineteenth century but were in turn defeated by the British and lost considerable land. Later they came under British protection until independence of India in 1947.AD. Now it is part of the state of Madhya Pradesh. List of rulersMalhar Rao 1731 - 1766 Male Rao 1766 - 1767 Ahalya Bai 1767 - 1795 Tukoji Rao 1795 - 1797 Kashi Rao Holkar 1797 - 1799 Khande Rao I 1799 - 1806 Yashwant Rao I 1806 - 1811 Malhar Rao III 1811 - 1833 Martand Rao 1833 - 1834 Hari Rao 1834 - 1843 Khande Rao 1843 - 1844 Tukoji Rao II 1844 - 1886 Shivaji Rao 1886 - 1903 Tukoji Rao III 1903 - 1926 Yashwant Rao II 1926 - 1947 It very hard to identify the issuing ruler unless the coin bears the name. Anonymous copper coins of "raij" series and "symbol" series are encountered in plenty. Some coins show the date but most of them do not. So ruler attribution is very difficult especially for those raij and symbol series.

We can read 98 on the obverse. "Shah Alam" can be read on its top.In raij series of coins, date if any would be in AH. Putting them together, it should be AH.1198,(Shah Alam period=1174-1221.AH), an issue during the reign of Ahalya Bai.

Mahitpur was an important township in Indore. Some coins showing a lion like figure and sometimes a "dragon" like floral design appear on such coins. On this coin, there are both the lion figure and to its front in worn out state, the floral design resembling a dragon.

Fascinatingly the lion and the "dragon" seem to look at each other.
