Quote: (when did "D" for 500 come into use?) Not a letter D, but rather a Gothic letter C (which has the two ends connected by a vertical line). In Roman numerals, the date inscription is MCCCCCII.

I guess the question is: when would this date be written as "MDII" rather than "MCCCCCII".

Nice coin. I don;t think we've seen Hanover yet? Quote: I guess the question is: when would this date be written as "MDII" rather than "MCCCCCII". Yes, that's what I meant. It's also interesting to see "ANNO" before the date in some of the last few years here.

Ok yes sorry that I misunderstood your question @tdziemia. I haven't looked into this question previously, but it is an interesting question. With that said, there were some coins being issued with the D in the place of the five Cs so perhaps the answer is that it varied depending on the mint and die cutter. Here is a Schilling from the German City State of Pomerania-Wolgast dated 1501 AD. It is attributed as Saurma 4849.

I am advised this Hungarian denar was minted 1500-02, so this would be a good place for it.

Here is my brother to @pepactonius' coin for today--a Batzen from the Habsburg Territory of Salzburg dated 1500 AD. We are now entering the time period where Levinson's book is relevant. This coin is attributed as Levinson IV-64. Anyone interested in the early dated coins of Europe might be interested in this earlier CCF thread: http://goccf.com/t/269713&whichpage=1
