1943-I Halfpenny With Die Anomaly - Coin Community Forum

I was struck immediately by a few apparent details such as the thickness of the roo's tail, distortion of KG and the mint dots, and dramatic thickening of the serifs in letters throughout the reverse. I have seen this before on American coins, where possibly a die has been heat treated between hubbings and has changed dimension. Here the expansion is pretty dramatic, resulting in thickening noted by the arrows. Notice how the the distortion displaces inward? This is my guess at least, and I'll be interested to hear a more expert analysis. Compare to a normal 43-I reverse: Report this Post to the Staff

Update: this coin has since been confirmed as a "Very strong class 6, distended hub doubled die." by Coppercoins. Thanks Chuck for the info! KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 06/02/2008 03:00 am Eddy, yes...it appears that way, and I believe there are other doubled die Aus pennies, such as the 1962 "double nose", which I haven't yet found.
