Ike dollars are impressively stern coins. In proof form they are serious silver. Over the years of my on-off collecting, I have paid them scant attention, until this past weekend afforded an opportunity to make a complex cross-hobby swap. The result was, I now own eight of these wagon wheel size reminders of the perilous, restrictive 1950's, a time when 'under-the-desk' was considered nuclear survival training. I've read some of this thread, but am still not quite sure what I have, in terms of current value or save-worthiness. I lack a proper album in which to display them. 2x2's are an insult to these majestic discs. There are three proofs, which appear mishandled as acetone does nothing toward removing the surface spotting: 1971s; 1976s 'type I and type II' (silver + clad). Also two '76s in silver unc; one '76D clad; a '78 and a '78D clad. It's hard to imagine these massive coins were ever actually intended to circulate in an age before cargo pants.

Almost every one of mine has some sort of haze, which was actually present before they were freed from their original government packaging. The OGP is not air tight, so where they were kept for the years before I acquired them is a huge factor. Regardless, I love them and would not trade them for anything.  |

I was going over some recent purchases and noticed, in addition to being a beautiful DDO / DDR, this coin also has a real nice Moon Line Die Clash!    Edited by chuckster 125

Here's one my dad owned, recently rediscovered while sorting through some of his desk clutter. He subscribed to lots of different investment newsletters. To my knowledge this is the only numismatic item ever included with any of those as a 'thank-you' token. Sadly, he never seemed to 'get' coin collecting although both his male offspring picked up the hobby enthusiastically at a young age. Instead he threw away hundreds of $ buying mint commemorative postage stamps which are today commonly sold in bulk for much less than face value.   |
