Am I seeing wear on the tail side or is it a weak strike? The closeups show some of the lettering better. "UNITED" and most of "STATES" look normal.

Appears the reverse is a weak strike.
I would put it at XF40

I'll guess some wear, some grease in the die, and strike weakness in the tail/reverse--pretty common.

Little bit of everything, culminating in a really cool coin.

Am I seeing a DDO or PMD with the two distinct serif tips on the F?

It appears to be MD, and the F looks like PMD. Thought DDO at first to....

Here's a couple more at different angles. Definitely looks strange.

Are the lumps at the top of the letters from die chips? I really love this coins design. I wish it would have been used on a bigger planchet like a half or dollar coin. You gotta love that bird.

The Gobrecht type dollars had a flying eagle on the reverse.

Vermontensium,

Shows how little I know. Still have a long way to go. I just looked at the Gobrecht dollars and they are very beautiful coins. Only problem is I don't want to spend 20K on a coin (unless it's worth over 40K). Thanks for the quick education. The School of Hard Knocks is never out of session.
