I picked three ugly, but raw, and very old coins out of my albums for fun. All of them have "issues". This one is very dark, but otherwise relatively problem-free. Except for the massive struck-through-something on the obverse, that is. This was included as part of a junk silver lot that had mostly Barbers in it, and some no-date or holed Seated coins. Not sure why this was in there. It's not fake. How would you grade it? Does it look "details" to you because of the obverse, or maybe the super-darkness? Price paid: Well, I got 25 Barber quarters, 6 liberty Seated dimes, a Mercury dime, 6 Barber dimes, and an obliterated Barber half dollar for $119, as a lot. The Barber quarters all ended up being solid G/AG coins with full obverse rims, mostly problem-free, from 1898 to 1916, by the way, which makes my price of $3.something per coin seem ok with me. The Half is a very, very worn 1908-O, the Mercury a 1919. From the photo I'm not sure what is going on with the area to the left of the shield on the obverse. If this is the area you are referring to as possibly struck through, I can't tell from the photo. If this area does not cause a details, I'd place the grade at a VF-25. Toning should not affect the grade, although it does affect the eye appeal, and thus the value. Some folks like this original dark toning. Others (the magpies) like everything bright and shiny. It does not have enough value, even without a details problem, to warrant a TPG submission.

This one's a little tough. Cheating a bit and looking at PhotoGrade, I'd have to say VF-30. I put it lower initially, but details in the wreath and drapery are showing that shouldn't be present on VF-20.
Could probably use a touch of acetone/xylene, but that won't help the grade, just the appearance.
