i know that you dont want to handle it too much but would it be possible to take a photo outside the holder, especially of the reverse?

It looks like a proof to me too. I agree with CND--try and get a pic outside the holder, just be careful with it...you don't want to add any damage to it.

Hi CND! I meant to get on here sooner to thank you for the tips you gave me on selling those cents. Thanks! Got them listed on ebay tonight. Already have four 'watchers' but it's a 7 day auction. I'll let you know how it turns out. It's amazing how many of those boxes of '08 cents are going for around 80 bucks each! Hope mine does the same! Haven't gotten the chance to search nickels for a few days. Hopefully I'll be able to get back at in within the next few days. There's alot of good coins out there with my name on them and I really hate keeping them waiting !

I've been kind of scarce on the forums this weekend; was starting to burn out a bit overdoing the rolls. So, I bought and IPod from a fellow employee at work for a fraction of what it is worth, and I have been working on that all weekend! BUT, did two nickel boxes today, and actually pulled 58 pre-59's out of one of the boxes! 15 1958's, 8 1938's, and a decent number of late 40's "S" mints; somebody probably got rid of some solid date rolls (i would hope by accident)! Their loss, my gain! I will post the results for both boxes combined a little later.

Thanks CND. So far so good on those '08 cents. Got 'em listed on ebay and the bidders are on it like a sunfish on Mayflies . Still haven't found that 38d yet huh? I guess I just can't believe I found one with so little effort. Not gloating, just suprised! Well, I geuss you do still have 21,800 rolls to go yet . Maybe all your key dates are waiting for you on the back of all that . Happy hunting!

Man, I got a box of nickels today to keep me busy....i found two of what I thought to be silver nickels...42D. I was so excited I ran to the computer to check the mintage and by golly only the P and S mints were silver in 42 :( DANG...looks like the mintage is fairly low though so I kept them. I kept anything pre 70 cept the 64s cuz there were only a billion of each minted.

It is my opinion that the 1942-D before long will be a new semi key date to the Jefferson nickel series. THE OTHER BRUCE.

Just got done searching 3 boxes. Pre 1960 was about 1 out of 103, but no silver and two Canadian nickels

Sounds like you have a fun and not very expensive project. I was never into cents, but nickels (Canadian ones included) are a whole different story.

Yeah a 42 D is nothing to scoff at! I always considered it a semi key personally. Depending on condition it could be better than a War Nickel anyway. Take a real close look at the mintmark. Maybe you have a D over D?

Back in the mid 1990s when I used to nickel search very heavily, I went through more than 88,000 nickels (2200+ rolls) and found only three low grade 42D. Personally, I consider it a semi-key date even in low grades, but not as hard as the BIG 5 (38D, 38S, 39D, 39S, 50D). I'd put it in 7th place. 51S I think is in 6th place- didn't get any. Among the 5 keys, I only got one, a 50D.

ive found at least three 42d's and only one 51s so I agree that its after the 51s, 55p might be in between them though

I'll agree with mycrob about the 51s; thru 3300 rolls I still don't have one! I have found 3 42d's, but that makes them a very tough find. Other than the big 5 and some of the silver issues, the only date I have found to be rarer than the 42d is the 49s (I've found 2)
