We don't save everything before 1959. We average two "keepers" per box. We consider "keepers" to be:
Liberty, Buffalo, and silver nickels.
Any other nickel with a mintage under 15 million.
Plus the 1938p.
Plus any Canadian nickels that are hole fillers for our Canadian collections.

Thanks everyone for your info on your average find per box on war nickles. Mine is roughly about 1 every 1 1/2 box. My last box yesterday I found 2 silver nickles, I have never found more than 2 in a single box. My box yesterday was very good. 1939d 1939s 2 silver and 2 buffalo with no date. Also a Swiss 1982 20 centimes and a Guatemala 1996 10 centavos. I read somewhere you could use vinegar to show the date on worn Buffalo nickles. Does anyone have info on this? |

trapper-just put a dateless buff in vinegar until the date shows up. I do it all the time, its pretty cool! It may take a week sometimes. Other times it takes a day or two.
DanMan-im guessing they do that because after going through so many boxes I have WAY too many pre60s nickels of the same condition that when I find now I throw back.

I searched 4 boxes this week, I landed 3 silvers, and 2 1942 non silvers.2 of the silvers came in my third box. odd ball find was a 1993 mexican 50 cent coin. Also got some coins for an album.

Oh I forgot to add, I actually did five boxes this week, but I was dissappointed, the one day I got 2 boxes, the second box was all 2011 minty fresh....lol

I did a box today, I got a 1943P, 1929 Buffalo in bad shape, 20pence peice, and a 1986 Dime! :) I also got two hole fillers and a few pre-1960.

My son and I each have four sets of the 1938-1961 Whitman folders. After mostly filling those, we just started keeping the ones I mentioned above. If we saved everything before 1960, we would have THOUSANDS of nickels now, most of which would be worth nothing more than face value. We would have HUNDREDS of dollars tied up in these common nickels. We don't see any reason to do that.
