coppernickeldaddy, Are you still doing halves? If so, how far up I-75 do you go? I don't want to invade your territory. mfhorn

I go up pretty much no further than Georgetown, and south to Berea. Prefer the small towns east and west of Lex. Thanks for asking; it saves us both time!

Nice to see a lot of feedback about the survey! To answer a few questions, the 1958 Philly nickel numbers are somewhat skewed because back a few months ago I got three boxes from three different banks (but the same armored co.) that contained from 10 to 15 1958's in each, most of them BU! Must have been a large number of them dumped by somebody at the same time. That, despite having looked through over 6000 rolls, have messed up the numbers somewhat. Also, XoG, the Italy 20 centimes piece is nickel, I believe. Haven't had a chance to check the Krause book (I don;t own one; will have to take a trip to the library) to check it's value. I do know it comes in two varieties, a reeded edge and a plain edge. But, no idea of value!
I have another update ready to go on here, and I have an unopened box to go through.
Completely unrelated, but shocking, was a 1924D Lincoln found in a box of pennies yesterday! Lousy condition, but a tough date!

Corinth is the furthest south I've been, and it was a waste. Happy hunting!

Hi all
Worked $120 this evening and found 18 pre-1960 jeffersons, only 3 of which were from the 40s, no silver. I did find a 1923 Buffalo in lousy shape but I can just make out the date so I'm happy

A ways back my Dad gave me a sandwhich bag FULL of silver nickels !! 150 of them I believe.....he had saved them since he was a kid, he's 71 now. So, I have a hard time going "nickel searching" to make it 151 !......(esp., it seems, after months and months and thousands of nickels searched and people are barely finding any!) Sorry just had to "wade in" with that !!

coppernickeldaddy, I don't think your numbers get actually "skewed" when you come across a catch and released roll. I think it is just part of the real picture of what is out there. If anyone looks at your inventory, I think it is exactly proportionate to what one could expect to find if they were doing the same project as you. The odds of coming across a hoarded roll is the same in your turf as much as it would be in mine. You have taken on a very large project, and the law of large numbers would most likely be an accurate survey of what is out there and what someone could expect to find per roll. I sure do hope somebody does a story on your study. If they don't please submit a letter to Coin World or Numismatic News yourself. Thanks for doing this!

Here is a list of the Nickels I would be and have been buying and keeping. I've been collecting these nickels about 30 years and did a lot of roll searching but nothing like CND's project.
XF or better 38's Any 38D's 38S's AU and better 39's Any 39D's 39S's Any 42D's All War nicks that are not eyesores. AU and Unc 46D's XF or better 46S's 47D's 47S's 48S's Unc 48D's Unc 49's 49D's AU or better 49S's. XF or better 50's and 50D's XF or better 51's 51D's and VF/XF 51S's or better. AU or better Full step or well struck 52S's 53S's 54S's XF or better 54's 55's AU or better 58's and 59's Watching for very dark 54's 55's 58's and 59's and just the opposite (Bright)
Well struck UNC 60's 60D's 61's 61D's 62 62D's 63's 63D's 64's 64D's Ch Unc 65's 66's 67's Well struck with some trace of steps UNC 68D's 68S's 69D's 69S's 70D's 70S's AU's of the same above with Full Steps
Gem Full step 71's 71D's 74's 76's 79's 82P's 82D's 83P's 83D's 84P's 84D's 85P's 85D's Anything newer I am keeping only what would probably grade PCGS 67 or better. I have about 1000 that don't quite make the grade that I am going to sell. I also have a very close to Full Step set from 38 to date incl some variations and proofs from 52 on up and have a second Gem set I am working on for business strikes.
I don't know why I wrote this except by experience I know that these are the hardest to find in these conditions and IMO worth hanging onto.

Are 1970 s Jefferson nickels common? I searched through a bank box and found 7. What Nickels should I be keeping, other than wartime? Are there any errors I should be searching for? My CherryPickers Guide doesn't show cents or nickels. Thanks, Mike

I take that back. I found nine 1970 s and three 1968 s. Is that common for one box.

mikep- yeah, the 1968 s, 69 s, and 70 s are fairly common. But some people do keep them just for the heck of it.

Both S & D 1968 1969 and 1970's especially D's in FULL STEPS are scarce in better UNC grades and command a premium. The errors to be looking for would be the 39 double monticello reverse 42 D over horizontal D MM 43 over 42 overdate 43 double eye Jefferson 1944 no mintmark ( not really part of the set but cool to find ) 45 P double monticello reverse Several repunched mintmarks on the War Nickels46 D over upsidedown D MM 49 D over S 54 S over D 55 D over S also there are many double dies, some yet to be discovered probably, but learn the difference between Machine Doubling and actual double dies. Wheezy, Isn't the 44 no MM a counterfeit? Thought that I read that somewhere. Also, love the link to the NGC website; learned a lot! It will take me longer to go through boxes now!!

Looking at the Coin World Trends Jefferson nickel page, I noticed something startling. The often ridiculed (because of massive overproduction) 1964 and 1964d are worth $1 each in MS60, but move on up to MS65 Full Steps and they are worth $1,000 and $1,400. Do you happen to have a 1961d in MS65 Full Steps? Down payment on a house! Value is $25,000!!
