Just wanting to get some suggestions on dealing with verdigris. I have this 36P DDR [among others] where verdigris has ruined the surface of the coin. While I know that I cannot reverse this damage, I would like to find out if there is a way to inhibit it from growing any worse and, if possible, even remove some of it. Also, the best practices for storing them given that verdigris is present. Thanks edit: I do have some Verdi-Care and Coin Conditioner  Edited by CentSation

I think you have solved your own question. Verdi-care will fix your verdigris issue. You should be able to treat your coin to stop further damage, but not erase it. If you want/need more, PCGS offers a curation service.  |

What does the obverse look like ? Just go ahead and give it a Verdi-Care soak just enough to cover coin , the longer the better . When you take it out start your conservation with Q-tips ,tooth pics ,and soft clean cloth . Note , if your going to holder the coin make sure it is dry before you do so .  |

Keep in mind that once the verdigris is removed, the area underneath will probably be a different color than the surrounding area.

Thanks for the responses. I did treat this coin with VerdiCare prior to these pics. I put on a few drops* and "pushed" it around the obverse and reverse for several minutes with a toothpick trying to loosen up the verdigris. Unfortunately, it did not do anything of note. The obverse does have some damage to LIBERTY. It is just a generic DDR at this point because I am not sure which one it is so I will probably just put it in a flip. Should I let the V-C dry on the coin to protect it before putting it in a flip or just use the Classic Coin Conditioner after using and rinsing off the V-C? Thanks * V-C is not easy to come by and I only have the trial size.  Edited by CentSation

sorry for reply here and I dont want to take away from the credit of VC, I was a industrial cleaner/painter/sandblaster for over 28 yrs isn't VC just a diluted acetone vinegar mix?

Ha, no problem. Thanks for replying. The bottle does not state what is in it but, I do know that it was developed by a coin collecting chemical engineer.
I believe that whatever is in it has a positive effect on the coin.

As was mentioned earlier...keeping it (VC) on there the longer the better. The yuck that was on there was there for a long time...Let the VC stay on there to kind of penetrate and soften up the build up...then gently try and remove the build up...it may take a second application...

@merclover sorry didnt mean acetone ment acetate food grade of course like what they put in grape soda. regardless heh coin turned out nice.  Edited by Eyez
