this is hard for me to say being a Morgan Collector myself, but If you are a dime collector and have Morgans I would sell them to get a Nice KEY date dime. The Key Date is always going to be a key date and going to appreciate in value throughout the years where a common date Morgan will not. Plus the Mercury dime will probably give you more enjoyment of ownership then the Morgans are doing as well since you like the Mercury dimes more than the Morgans |

Key date collectible vs. common silver coinage? Both can offer good return on investment over time but one is dependent upon collector demand, the other on silver prices. Tough call for short-term but for long-term, you'll likely have more fun with the collectibles.

I agree with everyone. I have never regretted buying a VF 1885 nickel. Nor an 1895-O dime in AU58. Nor the 1913-s quarter in VG with eye appeal to die for! All three are keys and all gosh darn next to impossible to find. If Mercury dimes are YOUR passion, Caferacer311, then sell off anything that is not and search out those elusive high grade keys. Within the last year and a half I have sold the following: Buffalo nickels - complete set TWO Mercury dimes - complete sets And common 90% silver. Also, if you can track down these dimes locally then offer to make a trade for what you have. Doing cash and trade deals was completely successful for me last month at the NH Coin Expo. The better investment? INVESTING IN WHAT GIVES YOU JOY! Any monetary increase is just a nice, fringe benefit. |

If you're asking if you should sell, you should sell. I've never regretted upgrading to something I like more when deciding to sell.

Thanks all for the great tips! :D I really appreciate it. So I have come to the conclusion to sell some of my morgans and new american eagles. If I can afford it I would like to get a 1916D Merc in "G" grade or a 1920's really high MS grade Merc. Ill list my coins here that I will be selling, maybe you guys can give me an estimate of what I might be able to get out of them.

Sounds good! Some of the Morgans I have some sort of VAM variety, some letters look double stamped and also the numbers, I'm not sure if that makes it more collectible. Edited by Caferacer311

You probably wouldn't like my suggestion since I never sell coins, never have and never will, hopefully. So my suggestion is contrary to everyone elses. BUT I say keep all. And also buy what you can afford in those Mercury dimes too. Most people that buy and sell all the time normally don't care but I like and collect all coins. Someday in the future you might end up saying "Nuts, why did I sell those?" I know how you feel about Mercury dimes. I've got well over 3,000 of them. To bad that the Silver prices make them a bit higher in price than just a few years ago. |

No I like your suggestion :) thanks for sharing, I do understand your point completely because I was thinking the same. My budget now is tight so that's why I thought selling my Morgans would be a good idea, I'll think it over and make sure I make a smart move, thanks all!

Personally I would go for the 16D since it is the key to the set, and then the rest of the set would not be too hard to complete from there. After I had all of them , then I would start upgrading. BUT - that's just how I like to collect. Some people like nicer coins at first b/c they don't mind the holes in the album as long as the pieces they have are fantastic condition.

As a merc lover on a budget, I have wrestled with this same question. A few years ago, I sold some Barber halves to buy a 1916-d in AG-G. I didn't collect the halves so they were expendable. I still think about it sometimes, but I am happy that I made the purchase. I still hope to upgrade the 1916-d someday if finances permit. Definitely get the key dates first in the best grade you can afford. |
